Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of Thursday of Parashas Korach, in which you describe to me all that has happened to you since you arrived in Eretz Yisrael. Then, at the end of your letter, you yourself bring a reply to your question, by evoking the city that you have just abandoned, after having been the Rav there for many years.

You know the reply that Yirmiyahu made to Baruch ben Neriyah, when the latter asked him to prophesy, at the time of the destruction of the Beis HaMikdash and the departure of Yisrael into exile. In fact, when the Jews were exiled to Edom, the Shechinah accompanied them. In this way, the Presence of Hashem found Itself in exile.

You also know the reply of the Tzemach Tzedek to one of the great Chassidim, which was reported to us many times by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. This Chassid* informed him of his desire to go to Eretz Yisrael, and the Tzemach Tzedek replied to him: "Reb Hillel (of Paritch, one of his great disciples) has no need of Eretz Yisrael, and it is the same for you. Make Eretz Yisrael here."

Now, one can ask oneself about this affirmation. How is one to "make Eretz Yisrael here," and what is the relation with the question posed? The reply is the following. When one wishes to go to Eretz Yisrael, one must first "make it here," there where one resides — in the present case, in Eretz Yisrael.

I do not wish to evoke at greater length what is painful, all the more so as you find yourself effectively in Eretz Yisrael. Nevertheless, one can grant you extenuating circumstances. Even before installing yourself in the Holy Land, you went there and you went into that city.

May Hashem therefore grant that, being in Eretz Yisrael, you make Eretz Yisrael around you, in the deep sense that is enunciated by Chassidus*: "the land that wished to do the Will (Ratzon, of the same etymology as Eretz) of the Creator," "Yashar L-El" (anagram of Yisrael), "for you have struggled with angels and with men" (this is why Yaakov was called Yisrael). And, there is another explanation, even deeper, according to which Yisrael is the anagram of Li Rosh, "a head for Me." You will consult, on this subject, the Likkutei Torah, Shelach, beginning at page 48b.

With my blessing of good health for you and for your wife, the Rebbetzin, in wishing you success in all that has just been said, with largesse of spirit,

P.S.: Doubtless you participate in the Chassidic gatherings and you emphasize their importance, from time to time. May Hashem accord you success.
