Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 22 Sivan, in which you describe to me what you have lived, the various modifications of your situation, until this day, and your current situation, which is better than in the past, but must still be improved on various points.

You must rejoice in the merit and the success that are yours, since you find yourself in the Yeshivah Lubavitch, founded and directed by the Rebbe and by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. These ones invested their strengths in it, made don of themselves for it. Whoever finds himself there with the two hundred forty-eight limbs and the three hundred sixty-five sinews of his body, physically and morally, forges thus the receptacle that permits him to integrate their blessings, in order to know success each time that this is necessary.

In this way, you will be able, in all the measure of the possible, to study Torah, pray, accomplish the mitzvos* in the best fashion and with joy. Indeed, if a little light pushes back much darkness, how much more can do it much light and, a fortiori, the luminary itself, which is the source of this light, in this case Chassidus*, its teaching, its practices, and its customs.

As you know, fasts and mortifications are foreign to the way of the Baal Shem Tov. Various texts establish it, in particular the Chassidic discourse of 10 Shevat 5713, entitled "Basi LeGani."

Moreover, the Sefer HaToldos Maharash explains that, for a Chassid*, to fast signifies not to do what he desires, were it even for a few moments. You will consult also the Tanya*, in chapter 27, page 34b. The above-cited Chassidic discourse equally emphasizes the necessity of preserving health, in order not to suffer any hindrance from the body.

When you fortify yourself in all that and act in this sense, Hashem will accord you an increased help and all that will apply concretely, in your daily existence.

You speak of improvement. You will therefore multiply the words of Torah and of prayer. Doubtless you have engraved in your spirit a few chapters of Mishnah*, of Tanya, of Chassidic discourses, in particular the one entitled "Vehadarta penei zaken," which is at the end of Parashas Kedoshim, in the Likkutei Torah.

With my blessing of success in the study of Torah, prayer, and good deeds, which are the three pillars on which the world, and equally the small world that man constitutes, repose,
