Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 17 Sivan, in which you describe to me what your life has been until now, with its evolutions, and your current situation with the various points that must be modified.

As you know, the Sages say: "One who tells you 'I did not make efforts and yet I knew success' — do not believe him; one who tells you 'I made efforts and did not know success' — do not believe him." In the present case, you can make the choice of a good and straight way, materially and spiritually at the same time, by absorbing yourself in the study of the revealed part of Torah and Chassidus*, in the practice of mitzvos*. To attain this, it is fundamental to pray with fervor.

Concerning what troubles you and that you mention in your letter, one can observe concretely that each one receives the strengths necessary to fortify himself and to chase from his four cubits all that veils, that obstacles the true Will of Hashem, the accomplishment of the desires of the Creator.

Quite obviously, the help of Hashem is systematically necessary. One obtains it by maintaining the three studies, well known, that are common to all, instituted by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, and bearing on the Chumash*, the Tehillim*, and the Tanya*. One does it also by giving Tzedakah*, spiritual and material, by going to the mikveh*, conformably to the decision of Ezra.

Moreover, you have had the merit to do your studies at the Yeshivah Lubavitch, which was founded and which is directed by the Rebbe and by his son, my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us. These ones invested and still invest their strengths in this Yeshivah, permitting it to have a considerable success, as well as those who lead studies there.

It follows from what has just been said that you must set aside your thoughts, the reflection that your situation inspires in you. Consecrate yourself to the study of the revealed part of Torah and of Chassidus*! Be strong in your bitachon* in Hashem! By investing your efforts in all these domains, you will find satisfaction and, much more, you will know success.

You tell me that your memory is weakened, that it even happens to you to forget what is evident. This is also the consequence of your reflection. If you put into practice all that has just been said and if you forget these ideas, this will also improve.

You must not constrain yourself to memorize what calls for an effort on your part. When you feel weak, you will change the theme of your study, in function of your tastes. Then, you will try once again.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ז סיון בו כותב ע"ד מצבו עד עתה והשנ[ו]ים שבזה ומצבו עתה הדורש תקון בכמה נקודות.

הנה ידוע פסק רז"ל לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין יגעת ולא מצאת אל תאמין, והרי בנדון דידי' הבחירה נתונה בידו ללכת בדרך הישר והטוב לפניו בגשמיות וברוחניות גם יחד ע"י מסירה ונתינה ללימוד הנגלה והחסידות וקיום המצות, ומהעיקרים בזה בעבודת התפלה בהידור, וכל אותם הענינים המבלבלים אותו שמזכירם במכתבו, הנה רואים במוחש אשר לכאו"א ניתנו הכחות להתגבר ולבטל הענינים שבד' אמות שלו שמעלימים ומסתירים על חפצו ורצונו האמיתי שהוא קיום רצון הבורא.

מובן שלכל דבר צריכים לסייעתא דשמיא ושזוכים לזה גם ע"י שמירת שלשת השיעורים השוים לכל נפש מתקנת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע בחומש תהלים ותניא הידועים, נתינת צדקה ברוחניות ובגשמיות וזהירות בטבילת עזרא וכו'.

ובפרט שזכה ללמוד בישיבת תומכי תמימים שנתייסדה ומתנהלת ע"י כ"ק אדמו"ר ובנו כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר - זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע שהשקיעו ומשקיעים בהישיבה כחותיהם בהצלחה מופלגה בהישיבה ובתלמידי'.

המורם מכל הנ"ל, יסיח דעת ממחשבות שקו"ט ע"ד מצבו וכו' וילמוד במסירה ונתינה תורת הנגלה ותורת החסידות ויהי' חזק בבטחון בהשי"ת אשר כשיתייגע בכל הנ"ל ימצא את מבוקשו ולא עוד אלא שיהי' גם בהצלחה.

מה שכותב אודות שנתהווה לו חלישות בכח זכרונו וכן שלפעמים נעלם מזכרונו דבר הפשוט. הנה בכלל גם זה קשור במחשבות השקו"ט שלו הנ"ל, וכשיקיים את ההוראה הנ"ל בהיסח הדעת מהשקו"ט גם פרטים אלו ישתפרו. ואין לכוף על הזכרון ללמוד דוקא בענין זה שנתייגע, וכשמרגיש חלישות יחליף הלימוד ללימוד במקום אחר במקום שלבו חפץ ולאח"ז ינסה עוד הפעם.
