Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2772 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 9 · Letter 153

29 Sivan 5714,
Brooklyn.
To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,
Rav Yehoshua Shneur Zalman (Rav Y. S. Z. Serebryanski, of Melbourne, in Australia),
Greetings and blessing,
I received your letter of 10 Sivan. In the meantime, you surely received mine, in which you will find replies to several of the questions that you posed to me.
I will introduce the present with a general point. Ordinarily, your letters are filled with information emphasizing to me to what extent it is difficult and practically impossible to found a Yeshivah* in the place where you find yourself. This is, in particular, what you told me in your previous mail.
Now, you have observed evident miracles. In all that was not delivered to the free will of the Jews, you have obtained a considerable success. And, the difficulties have arisen only in what made the Jews intervene, in general, and the Chassidim*, in particular — that is, those who possess free will, being in the image of the Creator.
Indeed, only the Creator really possesses free will, as Likkutei Torah explains, at parshas* Emor, page 38b, commenting on the verse "Man shall be like us." In consequence, it is precisely where Jews are found that there are veils and obstacles.
You ask me whether you must create a Talmud Torah for the children, or content yourself with the day school. It is well evident that one must also found a Talmud Torah, all the more since it is not certain that the Yeshivah* will count enough students if one does not recruit them, in a first time, in the framework of a Talmud Torah or a cheder*.
Concerning collaboration with young men issued from another Yeshivah* or persons from other milieus, you tell me that your attitude until this day has been that of the back-and-forth.
As you know, it is fitting, in the measure of the possible, to receive every person with benevolence and to use the forces of each one, including those who do not belong to Chabad, in order to invest these forces in the domain of Chabad.
Nevertheless, if it is a question of a collaboration, in the framework of which each partner has an opinion to give, which can even, sometimes, be determining, it is fitting to be prudent, in particular in your country. For it is indeed, in the present occurrence, a question of aggrandizing the name of Lubavitch.
Quite obviously, this is independent of the fact of receiving students originating from these milieus (which poses no problem). The question poses itself uniquely from the moment when someone has a word to say.
It is clear that there must not be, within the precincts of the Yeshivah*, an activity linked to a group, whatever it be. For all that, it does not belong to you to verify whether the persons who come to pray or to study Torah at your place belong, or not, to that group. But, it is well clear that the building and all that is linked to it is not at the disposal of a specific group.
It is the same for the rite. It is certain that within the Yeshivah* bearing the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, the prayer must be conducted according to its own rite. There is in this no lack of respect toward anyone. All understand the meaning of the verse: "Is it a question of conquering the queen, in my presence, in my house?" (expression of Achashverosh, reported by the Megillah, when he thought that Haman wished to conquer Esther; in the present occurrence, it is normal, in one's own institution, to adopt one's own rite). The Yeshivah* and the edifice bear the name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, and must therefore correspond to him.
For all that, it is not necessary to verify the rite of each one. And, in consequence, if it happens that someone conducts the office according to his own rite, there is no place to make a war of it.
I repeat once again what I was saying previously. One must receive students at the Yeshivah*, even if there is to fear that they remain there only a little time. On the one hand, if one knows how to guide them as is fitting, perhaps they will remain there definitively, at least for most of them. Moreover, it is judicious to transmit to them a pure fear of Hashem, even for a limited time.
You conclude your letter by telling me that the Chassidim* really suffer to note that success is possible, but that it is prevented by the absence of suitable persons. Now, Divine Providence has led you, you and no other, to Australia. It has shown you immense miracles. It is therefore certain that the Chassidim* found in this country can accomplish all that is necessary.
May Hashem grant that one use the forces at one's disposal, as quickly as possible and easily.
With my blessing of success, in the expectation of your good news, and in greeting all your relatives,
