Igrot Kodesh · Letter 277 — Shanghai Shochet, Book Distribution, and Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch
Volume 2 · Letter 111
By the grace of Hashem, 8 Menachem* Av* 5707, To the great Rav*, distinguished Chassid*, man who fears Hashem, student of the Yeshiva*, Rav M. Ashkenazi[1], I greet you and bless you,
I spent several months in Europe and it is for this reason that I was late in responding to you. Please excuse me for this.
A) Enclosed you will find a letter of thanks and encouragement[2] for the publications, the terms of which I will not reproduce here, except to ask you to continue in this direction, if it is possible for you to continue the collection through your emissaries and to increase the sum already obtained for the publications.
It is doubtless unnecessary to specify to you how important all of this is, especially since my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, firmly demands the development of publication and dissemination.
B) I have spoken, on several occasions, with my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita, about the necessity of sending you a Shochet*. Certain persons were discussed, who subsequently found themselves unable to travel.
At the request of the Rebbe, a letter was sent, on this matter, to the refugee committee in Europe. If we receive information on this matter, we will transmit it to you.
C) It would be good if you could transmit here the sum relating to printing and to Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch*, in general, for in this matter the situation is very difficult.
D) You have surely already dispatched here the books you have printed and have retained only a few copies, which you will be able to distribute in your city and in your country.
E) As you have requested and according to our custom with those who collaborate in our work, we will send you, free of charge, what has recently been printed here, the collection of discourses[3] and the biography[4]. We have furthermore sent you five additional copies of each, so that you may sell them through your emissaries, or distribute them free of charge if you deem it necessary. Please inform us whether the same should be done in the future and the number of copies you need. And how many books in English should we send you for 'the Young Jew'[5]?
F) Why has the relationship between Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch and 'the Young Jew' of your city been severed?
I conclude by expressing the wish that, very soon, these days will be transformed into joy and gladness, Rav Menachem Schneerson
