To the great Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Chaim Shaul (Rav H. S. Brook, of the Holy Land),

Greetings and blessing,

I received your letter of 22 Sivan.

May Hashem grant that, in your next mail, you announce to me that the good has become even better, in your personal preoccupations as in your communal activities, in order to adorn and aggrandize the Torah.

I have already written to someone that this expression (adorn and aggrandize the Torah) receives, on the subject of the study of Torah, two diametrically opposed interpretations. On the one hand, it describes the study of children, according to the Rambam, laws of the study of Torah, end of chapter 2. On the other hand, it applies also to a study so elevated that it transcends the mitzvos*, according to tractate Chullin 86b.

These two explanations are not only diametrically opposed. In fact, what inscribes itself between two extreme values is qualified as small (since in such a case, one cannot exceed these extremes which, even if they are wide, remain no less limited). Thus, one employs, on the subject of Yaakov, who "spreads from one extreme to the other," the expression: "He is small."

It is therefore necessary to transcend the extremes, to surpass all the limits, whatever they be, as various texts of Chassidus* establish.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מכ"ב סיון, ויזכהו השי"ת לבשר במכתבו הבא, שמטוב הולך לעוד יותר טוב, הן בעניניו הפרטים והן בענינים הכללים - להגדיל תורה ולהאדירה, וכבר כתבתי לאחד שמקרא זה מובא בשני הקצוות דת"ת, הן בלימוד תשב"ר (רמב"ם הל' ת"ת ס"פ ב') וכן בלימוד התורה שהיא למעלה לגמרי אפילו מענין המצות (חולין פו, ע"ב) - היינו שלא רק מן הקצה אל הקצה, שכיון שמוגבל הוא בשני קצוות הרי נקרא קטן, וכמו שנאמר ביעקב - המבריח מן הקצה אל הקצה - כי קטן הוא אלא למעלה מהקצוות ולמעלה מהמדידה והגבלה איזה שתהי', וכמבואר בדא"ח בכ"מ.
