To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav A. Chanoch (Rav Avraham Chanoch Glitzenstein, of Yerushalayim),

Greetings and blessing,

You have redacted a collection relative to the Alter Rebbe, on the basis of the sichos* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, and of the information that is found in the Beis Rebbe, and it would be particularly judicious that you do the same for the Mitteler Rebbe and for the Tzemach Tzedek. You will do, for the latter, what you have done for the first.

Thereafter, you will be able to think also of a collection consecrated to the Rebbe Maharash, basing yourself on the extracts that figure in the Sefer HaToldos Rebbe Maharash (of which the Rebbe is the author) and its various chapter headings, to which you will add what has been printed since then.

I hope to edit, this summer, the Sefer HaSichos 5701 and 5702 (1941 and 1942, of the previous Rebbe). You will also find there elements to complete what has just been said.

You ask me whether you must edit, in the Bitaon (Bitaon Chabad, the organ of the youth of the Chabad association in the Holy Land), the note of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, on the period that preceded his imprisonment (see Igros Kodesh of the previous Rebbe, vol. 1, letter no. 340). This periodical is not its place, for it is impossible to publish this text without omitting certain extracts. Now, in the Bitaon, these passages will be noticed (because of their absence), for it is, all in all, only a small fascicle. It will not be the same in a collection of letters numbering several hundred pages.

It is necessary, indeed, to establish a general principle from what occurred when one printed the letter of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, emphasizing the difference between the study of Torah of a Chassid* and that of an opponent of Chassidus*, as I noted, some time ago, in the letter that I addressed to the youth of the Chabad association.

Doubtless we will edit here, on the occasion of the 12 Tammuz (date of the liberation of the previous Rebbe from czarist prisons), the continuation of the description of the imprisonment, by my father-in-law, the Rebbe, in the form of a fascicle.

Concerning the city in which I was born, it is Nikolayev and not Yekaterinoslav.

... נכון הדבר במאד שכמו וכדרך שסידר תולדות רבנו הזקן מלוקטים משיחות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע ביחד עם הידיעות שבס' בית רבי, יעריך כזה גם בנוגע לאדמו"ר האמצעי וכן בנוגע להצמח צדק, וכמעשהו בראשון כן מעשהו בשני אלו ובמשך הזמן אפשר יהי' לחשוב גם בנוגע לכ"ק מוהר"ש בכגון דא מיוסד על הקטעים שבספר תולדות מוהר"ש והר"פ דשם בהוספה מה שנדפס מאז ועד עתה. ותקותי שבמשך קיץ זה יופיע לאור ספר שיחות תש"א ותש"ב אשר גם בהם חומר בהנוגע לכל הנ"ל.

בשאלתו אם להדפיס בבטאון הבע"ל רשימת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר ע"ד התקופה שלפני המאסר, הנה בבטאון אין זה מקומו כיון שלהדפיס בהשמטת קטעים מסוימים אין זה דרך ובהבטאון יתבלטו אלו הקטעים ביותר כיון שאין זה אלא חוברת קטנה לפ"ע, משא"כ בס' קובץ מכתבים בעל מאות עמודים. ויש ללמוד בזה בנין אב ממה שאירע ע"י הדפסת מכתב כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר בחילוק אופן הלימוד דחסיד ומתנגד וכמו שכתבתי מכבר במכתבי לצעירי אגו"ח.

בטח נו"ל כאן לי"ב תמוז הבע"ל המשך רשימת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר ע"ד המאסר בחוברת בפ"ע.

בהנוגע לעיר הולדתי היא ניקאלאייעוו ולא יעקאטרינסלב.
