Igrot Kodesh · Letter 276 — Reward for Disseminating Torah and Chassidut

Volume 2 · Letter 110

By the grace of Hashem, 7 Menachem* Av* 5707, To the distinguished men who fear Hashem, who mobilize themselves to disseminate Chassidut*, act and cause others to act, with, at their head, the great Rav* and Chassid*, Rav Meir[1] and the pleasant man, Rav Chaim*, the Shochet*[2], I greet you and bless you,
It is with satisfaction that we have learned of your success in the fundraising campaign designated for the printing of the books of the Admor HaEmtzai*. These have already been published and you have doubtless sent them here, as we had agreed.
At the present time, you are undoubtedly making every effort to increase the amount collected, in order to fill part of what is lacking for our publications.
All of this constitutes a great merit. For persons such as yourselves, it is surely unnecessary to specify this and, a fortiori, to explain it. I would only like to emphasize that the great reward which results therefrom will protect you and illuminate you, in the World to Come* and in this world, morally and physically.
One can deduce this from the teaching of our Sages* according to which Hashem* acts 'measure for measure.' It is thus in the World to Come and in this world. It is stated, indeed, that 'the reward of the Mitzvah* is not granted in this world.' It is indeed commanded to us by Hashem, Who transcends all limits. This reward must therefore itself be unlimited and cannot be inscribed within a physical and limited world.
However, this is so only in a general sense. More specifically, there exist certain Mitzvot* for which one also receives a reward in this world, which accumulates with their infinite dimension. Thus, the essential recompense is preserved for the World to Come, but an ancillary recompense is indeed granted in this world.
Many among our Sages wished that their teaching be repeated in this world when their soul would be in the Heavenly Yeshiva*[3], so that they might dwell in both worlds simultaneously. Those who act so that this is effectively the case, by contributing to the dissemination of their teaching, are therefore rewarded, 'measure for measure,' in the World to Come and in this world, morally and physically.
The Torah* and the Mitzvot were given to souls clothed in a body. Nevertheless, their essential contribution is expressed in the moral dimension, in the soul and not in the physical body. Moreover, when they act upon the body, it is to break it and lead it to adopt a comportment contrary to its nature.
Then, the Baal Shem Tov* opened the path allowing one to serve Hashem with the participation of the body, joyfully, without breaking and mortifying it. One knows, in this regard, the commentary he gives on the verse 'when you see the donkey of your enemy.' My father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, has cited it in his discourses and it is reproduced in Hayom Yom* at page 23. Various texts of Chassidut explain it.
The dissemination of the Torah, and in the present case of Chassidut, enables one who studies it to bind himself to the tree of life, not through mortifications, but joyfully. It therefore enables one to obtain, 'measure for measure,' a reward that is both spiritual and material, all physical and moral good.
I conclude by expressing my respect and sending you a wide blessing, M. Schneerson
