Igrot Kodesh · Letter 275 — Multi-Topic: Family, Books, Halacha, and Exile as Divorce

By the grace of Hashem, 1 Menachem* Av* 5707, To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav H. Havlin[1], I greet you and bless you,
I am responding to your letter of 12 Nissan*. My response was delayed due to my trip to Europe.
A) I thank you for your wishes on the occasion of the arrival of my mother, the Rabbanit*, may she have long life. Whosoever bestows a blessing is himself blessed, with interest that exceeds the principal. Thank Hashem, the journey went well and she is doing well.
B) The deed of acquisition of the house and the estate of Chevron* belonging to my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, is not found among the documents you sent here some time ago[2]. Likewise, we have still not received the copy of this deed which you promise, in your letter, to send us. I hope that you will address it, immediately and without further delay, to my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita.
C) The book merchant says that he sent you the Yalkut Shimoni* and the Keren Ora*.
D) The copy of the letters of Rabbi Avraham of Kalisk* has indeed arrived, in a single copy, for the attention of my father-in-law, the Rebbe Shlita. I myself have received nothing[3].
E) We have still not received the article published in the magazine Bemichor*[4].
F) I already wrote, some time ago, to Rav M. A. L. Shapiro[5] and to Rav D. Shapiro[6]. I am surprised to have had no confirmation that they have received my correspondence.
G) We have received two packages of the fifth fascicle and one package of the journal that were printed in Eretz Yisrael*.
H) A biography of the Rebbe Maharash* has just been published. It has been entrusted to a traveler, for your attention.
I) You tell me that a page is missing in your copy of the Tzemach Tzedek*. You will doubtless be able to find another copy in your city and copy it out.
J) On the occasion of the yahrzeit* of my father, the 20 Menachem Av, I ask you to give to the Yeshiva* Torat Emet*, on my account, ten Shekels* which you will draw from our fund. You will give ten additional Shekels to the Kollel* and five to the international Tehillim*-reading group.
I said, in the course of a Chassidic* gathering, during the Shabbat* on which the blessing of the month of Menachem Av was pronounced, that its name is in reality Av* and it is thus that it must be written in a bill of divorce[7]. Nevertheless, in a marriage document or at the blessing of the month, one says Menachem Av.
Chassidut* explains, indeed, that a father, when he corrects his son, gives him proof of his deep love. This is effectively the case during the period of exile, when Israel is compared to a divorced woman. It is for this reason that one writes Av[8] in a bill of divorce.
We desire, nevertheless, that the love of Hashem take on a tangible form. Therefore, in the blessing of the month and in a marriage document, which is the antithesis of divorce, one adds the word Menachem*[9].

ב) שטר הקני' של הבית ונחלה בחברון אשר ע"ש כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א לא נמצא בין הניירות ששלח לכאן זה מכבר, כן לא נתקבל ע"ע ההעתקה משטר זה שמבטיח לשלח במכתבו הנ"ל. תקותי אשר עתה עכ"פ יושלח שטר זה תומ"י לידי כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש בלי כל דחויים.

ג) המוכר ספרים אומר אשר שלח להם היל"ש וקרן אורה.

ד) העתקות מכ' מהר"א מקאליסק ע"ש כ"ק מו"ח אד"ש נתקבל רק שילוח אחד במשך כל העת, על שמי לא נתקבל כלל.

ה) המאמר הנדפס ב"מישור" לא הגיע לע"ע.

ו) מכבר עניתי להרמא"ל שפירא והר"ד שפירא (בעהמ"ס בני ציון) על מכ' בחד"ת.

ולפלא שלא אישרו קבלת מכתבי.

ז) נתקבלו שתי חבילות של קונטרס הא וחבילה של היומן שנדפסו בא"י.

ח) הו"ל זה עתה ספר התולדות אדמו"ר מהר"ש נ"ע ונשלח לו ע"י נוסע.

ט) אודות דף החסר בצ"צ שלו בודאי יוכל להשיג במחנו עקז' שלם להעתיקו משם.

יוד) ליום היארצייט של אאמו"ר נ"ע כ' מנ"א אנא לתת על חשבוני מקופתנו עשר שקל לתו"א, עשר שקל לכולל וחמש לחברת תהלים העולמית.

אמרתי בהתועדות דשבת מברכים מנ"א דשם החודש הוא אב וכן כותבים בגט (ראה קב ונקי סנ"א סק"ד) אבל בכתובה וברכת החודש אומרים מנ"א. וי"ל ע"פ המבואר בדא"ח דיש לראות גודל אהבת האב כשמכה את בנו, וזהו בזמן הגלות שאז ישראל כאשה שנתגרשה (יומא פ"ב) לכן בגט כותבים אב (לשון אב, כ"כ בד"ה נחמו עת"ר) אבל בקשתנו היא שתהי' האהבה בהתגלות דוקא ולכן בברכת החודש (וכן בכתובה שהיא כדי שלא תהא קלה כו' היפך דגירושין) אומרים דוקא מנחם.

ברכת לאלתר לגאולה ולנחמה כפולה.
