To the directors of the association of Chassidei* Chabad,

may Hashem accord you long life,

Greetings and blessing,

A) I wrote to you some time ago to question you on the situation of the Chabad shuls in the Holy Land and on what occurs there.

The object of the present is the following. If you possess as of now information on this subject, kindly communicate it to me as quickly as possible, for this matters, in particular, for the 12 Tammuz (date of the liberation of the previous Rebbe from Soviet prisons) which approaches.

This date marks, indeed, the only festival of the year that is specific to Chabad. For the 19 Kislev (date of the liberation of the Alter Rebbe from czarist prisons) is also celebrated by the Chassidim* of Poland. One will therefore profit fully from the 12 Tammuz in the domain of Chabad, by making the diffusion of it that befits, sufficiently early. Quite obviously, the Chabad shuls will play in the matter a primordial role.

This adds itself to the essential question, the necessity, for these shuls, to keep their specificity and to develop themselves — that is, to reinforce the influence that they exert on their surroundings and on the persons who come to pray there. All that depends, in large part, on the one who directs it, the Rav or the one who teaches Torah there.

In addition to information of general scope, it is therefore necessary to know who these persons are. I therefore await precisions on this subject and your propositions, as to the actions of the association of Chassidei* Chabad that may be conducted in these shuls, on this occasion.

B) I learned, with surprise, that some manuscripts of Chassidus*, originating from the Holy Land, were brought to London and here, in order to be sold there. I am particularly surprised by this (for one would have had to acquire them for the Rebbe's library in Eretz Yisrael, even before their being put on sale).

Perhaps you had no knowledge of it, or you did not pay attention to it. Indeed, these manuscripts, in the Holy Land, could have been bought less dear and, above all, one could have assured oneself that they did not fall into hands foreign in the matter, or even foreign in the proper sense.

To complain of the past is useless. I demand, by contrast, that this situation be repaired in the future. But, my surprise is particularly great. For several years, I have asked to diffuse my request, that of seeking out manuscripts of Chassidus* and sending them here, or, if this is not possible otherwise, of borrowing them in order to restitute them subsequently. Now, during all these years, only one person has sent me some manuscripts, in exchange for other books.

C) To follow up on what has just been said, I learned that the grandchildren of the Tzaddik*, Rabbi Sh. N. of Bobruisk (Rabbi Shmaryahu Noach, the Rebbe of Bobruisk, son of Rabbi Yehudah Leib, the Rebbe of Kopust, and grandson of the Tzemach Tzedek), possess several manuscripts of Chassidus* and perhaps even of the revealed part of the Torah, redacted by our masters, the Tzemach Tzedek and his sons, or, according to some, the Alter Rebbe and the Mitteler Rebbe, and they are putting them on sale.

Those who communicated to me this news could not specify whether it was a question of the original of the manuscript or of its copy. But, in any event, kindly verify it. I do not know precisely which grandchild it is. But, you will ask him, in my name, to permit one of the young men to study the content of these manuscripts and to transmit to me his conclusions.

If there are, in these manuscripts, elements that are not in my possession, especially if they modify what is currently printed, I would like to obtain them or, at the very least, to borrow them for some time.

This request is also meant for the commentaries of Rabbi Yitzchak Aizik Epstein of Homil and of Rabbi Hillel of Paritch (two of the great Chassidim* of the Mitteler Rebbe and of the Tzemach Tzedek), whose merit will protect us.

... כתבתי מכבר בשאלת מצב בתי כנסיות חב"ד באה"ק ת"ו ומהנעשה אתם... ועל של עתה באתי, אשר אם כבר יש אצלם ידיעות בזה כדאי להודיע בעוד מועד, כיון שזה נוגע בפרט לי"ב תמוז הבע"ל, שזהו היומא דפגרא היחידי במשך השנה ששייך ביחוד לחב"ד (כי אפי' י"ט כסלו, הרי ישנם גם מחסידי פולין שחוגגים אותו), ולכן יש לנצלו בכרם חב"ד ביחוד, ע"י פרסום הראוי בזמן המתאים מקודם, ומובן שבזה הרי יש לנצל האפשריות דבתכ"נ חב"ד. והוא נוסף על השאלה העיקרית, שמוכרח לשמור על צורתם דבתכ"נ אלו ולפתחם, היינו להוסיף השפעתם על הסביבה וגם על בתי מתפללי בית הכנסת, שבמדה גדולה תלוי זה בהנהלת הבית הכנסת והרב או המגיד שיעור שלהם.

ולכן עם הידיעה כללית צריך להיות ג"כ ידיעה במהות אנשים הנ"ל. ואחכה לידיעות מפורטות, וכן להצעה מצדם אודות הפעולות דאג"ח האפשריות בבתכ"נ אלו, בקשר עם הנ"ל.

ג) בתמהון נודעתי, אשר זה לא כבר הביאו מאה"ק ת"ו ללונדון וכן לכאן כמה ביכלעך דא"ח למכירה. ולפלא גדול, שאו שלא נודע להם כלל עד"ז או שנודע ולא שמו לב - כי הרי יש מקום לומר, שעל אתר באה"ק ת"ו הי' אפשר לקנות ביכלעך הנ"ל בזול יותר, והעיקר לשמרם שלא יפלו בידי זרים (בענין זה, ומי יודע אולי גם זרים כפשוטו), ואין צועקין על העבר, ועכ"פ באתי בהתעוררות על להבא. ותמיהתי גדולה עוד יותר, שלמרות שזה איזה שנים שבקשתי לפרסם ולבקש ולחפש אחרי ביכלעך דא"ח ולשלחם לכאן, ואם אי אפשר אחרת הרי ע"מ להחזיר, ובמשך כל השנים האלו, הנה רק מאחד נתקבלו איזה ביכלעך בתור חילוף...

ד) בהמשך להנ"ל - הנה נודע לי, אשר אצל נכדי הרה"צ והרה"ח וכו' מוהרש"נ ע"ה מבאברויסק נמצאים כמה ביכלעך - בדא"ח, ואולי גם בנגלה - של נשיאינו היינו הצ"צ ובניו וי"א אשר גם מאדמוה"ז ואדמוהאמ"צ. מאלו שסיפרו לי לא יכולתי לברר אם זהו גוף כתי"ק או העתקה, אבל בכ"א נא ונא לבקר את הנ"ל (אינני יודע ברור אצל מי מהנכדים נמצא הנ"ל) ולבקשם בשמי, להרשות לאחד האברכים לעשות תוכן מביכלעך אלו ע"מ לשלחו לי, ואם יהי' בהם ענינים כאלו שאינם נמצאים תחת ידי, ובפרט מהשייכים להענינים ההולכים ונדפסים, שאוכל לקבל הביכלעך הנ"ל, עכ"פ בהלואה למשך זמן. ובקשה זו כוללת ג"כ דא"ח מהרי"א עפשטיין מהאמיל ומהר"ה מפאריטש זצללה"ה...
