Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2726 — Faith & Bitachon
Volume 9 · Letter 106

Blessing and greetings,
I received your letter, in which you report to me what was transmitted to you in my name. You tell me that you accept certain points and that you refuse others (this letter, addressed to a young woman, presumably responds to the fears that she experiences regarding the match proposed to her, since she does not wish to commit herself fully to the practice of Torah and mitzvos*). You will therefore apply the latter only under constraint.
The approach that you adopt is negative and inadequate. Each one wishes to have a happy life. Now, the quantity and the quality of the happiness depend on the King, King of kings, HaKadosh Baruch Hu*. The question that poses itself is therefore not to determine what man desires or what he does not desire, but rather to know how to assure his happiness, who can do it, under what conditions it is possible to attain it.
When he (presumably the one who should marry the addressee of this letter) was here, I told him that a wife can come to the aid of her husband or rise up against him. Certainly, it is difficult to determine from the outset what it will be, to know with precision what relations the one and the other will maintain, during decades. Nevertheless, a determining element in the matter is the relation that exists between the young people, their manner of taking into account, before the marriage, the conceptions of others. I therefore told him that it was necessary to verify all that, in the measure of the possible. And, in fact, it is the same for whoever wishes to marry.
For what concerns him, he must hide nothing from you of the conception that he currently makes of life. He must ask you to take a clear position on it. Now, if you adopt the attitude that you expose in your letter, and if you organize your life as it pleases you, without taking into account the opinion of Hashem and the teachings that He delivered to each Yid* and to each Jewess, you must really question yourself on this marriage and on this union.
He wished to know my opinion, to gather my agreement, and, according to his expression, my blessing. Now, I can, for my part, give this agreement with all my heart when I observe that the greatest chances are united for the common life to be happy. For that, it must be based on the mitzvos*, such as they are defined by the Shulchan Aruch* and not according to the idea that each one makes of them, accepting certain details, refusing others.
HaKadosh Baruch Hu* gives the assurance that, by committing oneself in His ways, one will have a life full of blessing and success. It is not the same, by contrast, if one adopts another attitude. Now, I cannot take the responsibility of contributing to such an action, when one of the two cannot promise to do what he does not wish and immediately invokes constraint.
When a woman pretends to maintain her position (as is doubtless the case for the addressee of this letter), to refuse to cover her head with a kerchief or with a wig, putting in question her own happiness and also that of the man with whom she must share her life during several decades, it is that she has no sense of responsibility, that she has a bad appreciation, that she does not know what common life is, does not understand that one must make concessions, sometimes important, to preserve unity and happiness. Now, these values impregnate the life of a Jew and a Jewess only through Torah and mitzvos*.
May Hashem help you to find your way in life, to discover what is, for you, the true good, the material and spiritual good, for, in fact, these two dimensions are inseparable.
With my blessing,
