Greetings and blessing,
I received with delay your letter, in which you speak to me of your son, distinguished young man who devotes himself to communal needs, has good comportments, and multiplies positive accomplishments to draw close the heart of the children of Yisrael to our Father Who is in Heaven.
You make me a part of the various places in which he could search for a match, and you express your fear on this subject. Indeed, what will one say when one realizes that he does not listen to his father, chas veshalom*, since the latter asks him to go to a certain country in order to marry? One will conclude, you say, that Chassidus* has had for effect to distance your son from the mitzvah* of honoring his father.
In fact, I asked myself whether it was necessary to reply to this question. Each one knows that the teaching of Chassidus* and its practices draw close the heart of man to the service of Hashem and to the practice of His mitzvos*. To pretend the contrary, chas veshalom*, would have no sense. In consequence, I am stupefied to note the fears that you experience.
I accord you, nevertheless, the extenuating circumstances, in the following manner. It is said that a man who suffers is no longer himself. In the present case, you advocate that he go to a certain country, and this can be compared to the situation of Moshe Rabbeinu, who, when he became angry, forgot the halachah*.
Our holy Torah affirms, in the Shulchan Aruch*, Yoreh De'ah, laws of respect for parents, end of ch. 240, that a disciple wishing to go to a place where he is certain of pursuing his studies with success is not bound to listen to his father if the latter asks him not to go there because he considers such a voyage dangerous. It is the same if a young man wishes to marry a woman while his father prevents him. You will also consult what the commentators of the Shulchan Aruch* say on this subject.
This halachah* applies even if the father is capable of explaining his position, if he enunciates a clear reason for it — for example, by reason of the danger that the place presents, or because the father has seen the young woman or the members of her family and, at the issue of this meeting, opposes himself to such a union. For what concerns you, by contrast, you have absolutely no proof to advance, and this halachah* therefore applies even more clearly.
Another point, which is essential: I do not understand why you must submit to such a trial your son, who, moreover, is full of qualities, while it suffices for you not to demand of him that he go precisely to that place. From then on, there will no longer be any putting in question of the respect due to the father. And, you know, in this regard, the decision of the Torah, figuring at the same reference of the Shulchan Aruch*, at paragraphs 19 and 20.
I have good hope that you will encourage your son, that you will support him in his sacred mission, that you will incite him to redouble ardor in assuming it. Beyond doubt, Hashem will reward this great mitzvah*, with His full and broad hand.
May Hashem grant that you conceive much Chassidic satisfaction from all your children.
I thank you in advance for letting me know that all this has arranged itself in the most favorable manner.
With my blessing,
