To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Dan (Rav D., of Bengardan, in Tunisia),

Greetings and blessing,

I received your letter of 28 Iyar, as well as the Haggadah and the Toldos Yosef. I thank you very much for them.

You evoke the time that you have fixed for the study of Chassidus*. This teaching is diffused through diverse books and pamphlets. You will be able to address yourself, on this subject, to the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Matusof (of Casablanca), whose address you will find below. He possesses books and pamphlets of this part of our Torah.

And, you know the explanation given by the holy Shnei Luchos HaBris, which is based on the verse: "I have sinned, for I did not know." In fact, the lack of knowledge is indeed considered as a fault. How much more is this the case in our era, since the Arizal, who still lives, decided that "it is a mitzvah* to reveal this wisdom" (that of the deep teaching of the Torah).

Quite obviously, it does not suffice, for this, to read the texts, even if, moreover, this reading has positive effects in different domains. For the study of Torah proceeds also from understanding. It is surely useless to say more.

Greetings and blessing,

You tell me, at the end of your letter, that you introduced a Sefer Torah into the shul, with songs and rejoicings, as is fitting. I was satisfied with this. You doubtless saw the letter on this subject of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, which figures in the third collection of his letters (Igros Kodesh of the previous Rebbe, vol. 6, letter no. 1612).

These days are those of the complement of the time of the giving of our Torah, bringing healing to the world. By making one's efforts bear upon it, one obtains the rains in their time, and the earth furnishes its agricultural production.

May Hashem grant that in these domains also, you know advancement, from one stage to the next, materially and spiritually at once.

ומה שכותב מענין קביעות לימוד בתורת החסידות, הנה תורה זו כבר נדפסה בכמה ספרים וקונטרסים, ויפנה בזה להרה"ח אי"א נו"נ עוסק בצ"צ מוה"ר שלמה שי' מתוסוף כפי הכתבת דלמטה, אשר תחת ידו נמצאים גם כן ספרים וקונטרסים בחלק תורתנו הק' זה,

וכבר ידוע פירוש של"ה הקדוש, חטאתי כי לא ידעתי, אשר גם העדר הידיעה לחטא נחשב, ובפרט בדורנו זה שפסק האר"י החי הקדוש שמצוה לגלות זו החכמה.

ומובן שאין יוצאים ידי חובתם באמירה בעלמא אשר אף גם אמירה זו סגולה היא לכמה וכמה ענינים, הנה לימוד התורה צריך להיות גם כן בהבנה והשגה. והאריכות בזה אך למותר.
