To the Rav, distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Chaim (Rav H. Herman, of Asmara, capital of Eritrea),

Greetings and blessing,

I received some time ago your letter, in which you confirm to me having well received the books that were sent to you from here. I am surprised that you do not specify to me whether you make use of them to strengthen the diffusion of Judaism, of Torah, and of mitzvos*.

You say that, if there were a spiritual guide among the local people, it would be easier to advise and direct them. You are indisputably right. Nevertheless, it is impossible to wait, for lost time cannot be recovered, and the youth develop, as our Sages note at tractate Kiddushin 34a. You and your friends must therefore do all that is in your power. And, nothing resists the will.

You doubtless know that the refugees from Russia and Poland, when they arrived in Paris, occupied themselves with assuring a good education to the children of the Yidden* of France, with whom, in a first stage, they had no common language. They had therefore to communicate by gestures of the hand and by means of the few words of Chumash* that these Yidden* (of France) knew, for having heard them in shul.

Little by little, their action developed itself, and it has known success in particularly important proportions. Tens of young men and young women pursue these studies and have already acquired a good understanding. What is more, they have, in addition, influenced their parents and have drawn them close to Judaism, to Torah and to mitzvos*.

If you followed this same way in the place where you find yourself currently, you would know success, beyond doubt. Our Sages emphasize that "one who saves a Jewish soul is considered as if he saved all of humanity" — and, what is more, you will save many souls.

On the occasion of the festival of Shavuos, the time of the giving and reception of our Torah, which approaches, I express to you, by the present, my blessing, in the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, that you receive the Torah in a joyous and profound manner,

זה מזמן קבלתי מכתבו בו מאשר קבלת הספרים שנשלחו מכאן, ולפלא שאין מזכיר אם משתמשים בספרים הנ"ל להחזקת והפצת היהדות התורה והמצוה,

ומובן אשר אף שצודק במש"כ שאם הי' מנהיג רוחני מבני התושבים עצמם הרבה נקל יותר להשפיע עליהם ולהנהיגם, אבל אין לחכות עד אז כי הרי הזמן הוא אבדה שאינה חוזרת וגם הנוער ההולך וגדל וכמרז"ל (קדושין ל"ד רע"א). ובמילא עליו ועל חבריו לעשות בזה כפי יכולתם, ואין לך דבר העומד בפני הרצון.

ובודאי ידוע לו שכאשר באו פליטי רוסיא ופולין לפאריז החלו להתעסק בשדה חינוך הכשר דבני היהודים דצרפת שלא היתה להם בתחלה כל שפה משותפת וצריכים היו להעזר ברמיזה בידים וכו' וכן במלות האחדות דלשון הקדש שבחומש וכו' שידועים היו גם להנ"ל על ידי זה ששמעום בבית הכנסת וכיו"ב, ולאט לאט פרחה עבודתם והצליחה בממדים רחבים יותר ויותר ועשיריות נערים ונערות לומדים כבר ומבינים בטוב, ולא עוד אלא שגם השפיעו בבית הוריהם לקרבם ליהדות לתורה ומצותי'.

וכשילכו בדרך זה במקומם עתה בודאי יצליחו, ולא רק ע"פ מרז"ל שהמקיים נפש אחת מישראל כאילו קיים עולם מלא אלא שבודאי יקיימו כמה וכמה נפשות.

ולקראת חג השבועות זמן מתן תורתנו וקבלתה, הבע"ל, הנני בזה להביע ברכתי בנוסח כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע, לקבלת התורה בשמחה ובפנימיות.
