Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of 17 Iyar, in which you speak to me of your daughter.

Our people is qualified as "a unique nation on the earth," and the Alter Rebbe explains, in chapter 9 of Iggeres HaKodesh, that Yidden* cannot separate themselves from the true Unity, including in their earthly preoccupations. A Yid* must therefore not only act and labor in a natural manner, but also have a moral accomplishment which, in a general manner, takes the form of an addition to Torah and mitzvos*.

You do not specify, in your letter, what the doctors prescribe to your daughter, except to change climate. You also tell me what are the medications that they prescribe here to heal her, even if the two words you say on this subject do not permit having a precise idea. Did they use cortisone?

In evoking a moral accomplishment, I was asking whether the birth of your daughter occurred in purity (whether her conception was in conformity with the laws of the Torah), whether, at the time, you respected family purity and frequented the mikveh*. I hope that you will not be affected by this remark. Indeed, I do not know you, and the health of the Jewish soul depends on this. There is therefore no reason to feel a false shame on this subject.

If this was not the case, chas veshalom*, you and your wife must not only respect henceforth these laws, in a scrupulous manner, but also act to diffuse them. This will repair, at least partially, what has occurred.

In any case, it would be good that your wife give a few coins to tzedakah* before kindling the candles of Shabbos and the festivals, as well as on Monday and Thursday mornings. You also will do likewise, before the morning prayer, on Mondays and Thursdays. After this prayer, you will read Tehillim* according to their monthly division. You will also have the mezuzos* of your house verified, in order to assure yourself that they are all kosher.

May Hashem grant that you announce good news in all these domains, that you tell me, in particular, that the state of health of your daughter has improved.

I address you my blessing so that you make use of your influence, as employee of the religious council (in a city in Eretz Yisrael), to strengthen the Tradition of Yisrael in your environment and the place where you find yourself, without concessions. To whoever adds (accomplishments) in this domain, Hashem adds (blessings) in all the needs that he experiences, as well as the members of his family.

במענה על מכתבו מי"ז אייר, בו כותב אודות בתו תחי'.

והנה אצל איש הישראלי שעמנו נקרא גוי אחד בארץ וכדיוק רבנו הזקן (אגרת הקדש ט') שגם בעניני ארץ לא יפרידו מאחד האמת, הרי ביחד עם עשי' ופעולה בדרך הטבע צריך לעשות מה בענינים רוחנים המתאימים שבכלל זהו תוספת בתורה ומצותי'.

אינו כותב במכתבו מה עושים הרופאים לבתו תחי' לבד העצה דהחלפת האקלים והתרופות שישתמשו בהם כאן למצב בריאותה ע"ד שמזכיר במכתבו (אף שכמובן אי אפשר לדעת ברור המצב על פי שתי מלות שמזכיר במכתבו) ההשתמשו cortisoneב ?

וכוונתי למ"ש לעשות מה בענינים רוחנים היא ראשונה לברר אם נולדה בתם בטהרה היינו ששמרו אז דיני טהרת המשפחה במקוה, ותקותי שלא יקפיד על הערתי זו, כי כיון שאיני מכירו ובענין הנוגע לבריאות נפש מישראל אין מקום לבושה שלא במקומה היינו בהידיעה בהנ"ל אם ח"ו לא הי' הענין כך אז עליו ועל זוגתו שיחיו נוסף על הדיוק בשמירת מצות טהרה הנ"ל מכאן ולהבא להוסיף אומץ בתעמולה בענין זה בפרט שזה תיקון במקצת עכ"פ בהנ"ל.

ובכל אופן נכון שזוגתו תפריש לצדקה איזה פרוטות קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל ערב שבת וערב יום טוב וכן ביום שני וחמישי בבקר, והוא ינהג ככה לפני התפלה בכל בקר דיום שני וחמישי, ולאחר התפלה של שחרית יאמר שיעור תהלים כפי שנחלק לימי החדש, וכן לבדוק את המזוזות בביתם שיהיו כולן כשרות.

והשי"ת יזכהו לבשר טוב בכל הנ"ל וביחוד מהטבת מצב בריאות בתם תחי'.
