To the Rav and tzaddik*, descendant of an illustrious family, issued from a great lineage,

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of the thirty-eighth day of the count of the children of Yisrael (the Omer*), which followed a long interruption. You announce to me good news therein, since you tell me that you are well.

May Hashem grant that each of us announce only good news to the other. And, "there is no good but the Torah," which is called Toras chaim*, which means that it is bound and unified with life, in the most literal sense, as one can understand.

It is clear that this includes also life in this world, as in particular chapter 36 of the Tanya* explains, and as one can deduce from the decision of our Sages according to which "the Torah is not in the heavens," but precisely here below.

I was glad to learn that you study every day the holy Tanya*. Indeed, this qualifier ("holy") was given to it in the approbation to its printing that figures in the Zolkiew edition, which was redacted, in a place far from where the Alter Rebbe lived, by rabbanim* who did not know him.

You also know what wrote the first ones to give their approbation to the edition of the Tanya*, those who were the great disciples of the Maggid of Mezeritch. Their words are printed at the beginning of the Tanya*, and what is clearly established has no need to be commented upon. You have doubtless also seen the note of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, which is found at the end of the collection of summaries and commentaries on the Tanya* (of the Tzemach Tzedek).

I thank you very much for having mentioned my name near the holy places (presumably in Eretz Yisrael). It is surely useless to recall to someone like you what is explained on this subject in a Chassidic discourse of the Mitteler Rebbe, son of the Alter Rebbe who is the author of the Tanya*. This text is entitled "Lehavin inyan hishtatchus al kivrei tzaddikim." One can also find precisions on this subject in the commentaries of Rabbi Hillel of Paritch.

As you ask me, I will mention your name and that of the members of your family when I find myself near the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us.

Last point, which arouses the most interest: you announce to me the good news of the birth of your daughter, with mazal tov*. You called her Sima Leah. May Hashem grant that she grow for Torah, the chuppah*, and good deeds. You and your wife will conceive of her and of all your children much Chassidic satisfaction, during long days and good years.

With my blessing, in the formulation of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, to receive the Torah in a joyous and profound manner,

ובדעתו לבנות שם .ויעזור השם יתברך שזה יהי׳ בהצלחה ,ועל פי פתגם
רבנו הזקן ,יתן לו השם יתברך הרבה גשמיות )יכולות חומריות( והוא
יעשה מהגשמיות רוחניות )להפוך זאת להשתתפות ותמיכה בענינים של
תורה ומצוות( ויעשה זאת מתוך בריאות ושמחה.
הרב רייצ׳יק שי׳ מסר לי גם שהוא רופא .הנני בטוח שמיותר
להדגיש לו ,שאצל אדם בריאות הגוף קשורה עם בריאות הנשמה ,ולכן
לא נחוצה לו הבהרה מיוחדת עד כמה חשוב גם אצל יהודי שנשמתו
תקבל את הנחוץ לה ,שאלו הם הענינים של תורה ומצוות ,שרק אז יכול
הגוף שלו להיות בריא .שזהו גם אחד הרמזים של המצוה להניח תפילין,
שמניחים על הראש בו נמצא המוח ועל היד כנגד הלב ,שעל ידי המוח
קשורים כל העצבים של כל הגוף ,ומהלב מוזרם הדם בכל הגוף,
ובתפילין ישנן ארבע פרשיות של תורה ,שתחלתם הוא הפסוק שמע

ישראל הוי׳ אלקינו הוי׳ אחד ,שזו הקריאה לכל יהודי שישמע ויזכור
שהשם יתברך הוא בעל הבית היחידי בכל ועל הכל ,ובמילא גם בחיים
הפרטיים שלו ,וכאשר ידיעה זו מקיפה וחודרת במוחו ולבו ,או אז כל
הגוף שלו וכל הנשמה שלו בריאים.
הנני מקוה ששורות אחדות אלו מבהירות בקצרה קוים אחדים
מהרמזים החשובים של מצות תפילין ,ושייכותה עם עניני היום יום.
אשמח לשמוע ממנו מזמן לזמן ומאחל לו הצלחה בכל הנזכר לעיל.
