Blessing and greetings,

I received your letter of 22 Iyar, in which you speak to me of your son. You wish that he assure his material subsistence and that he marry, these two objectives being linked. You therefore wish that he learn a trade right away.

Your son studies Torah with several young men of his age or having a few years more than him. It seems to me, therefore, that he must not distinguish himself from his friends. In a general manner, it is too early, at his age, to think of making a career.

In your letter, you cite the case of someone who is much older than him, and this boy has, moreover, several particularities that are specific to him. Conversely, it is currently a pity to deprive your son of the study of Torah, in which he knows success and which he appreciates.

At present, the cutting of diamonds is no longer a leading sector, and it is, moreover, a trade that one can learn in two or three months, once one knows to whom to address oneself. Sufficient time therefore still remains. When the moment comes, it is certain that Hashem will permit him to settle himself, in a positive manner. He will earn his living advantageously and will find a good match. For the moment, it is preferable that he devote his time to acquiring knowledge of Torah. This will be useful to him, materially and spiritually, for all the rest of his life.

In consequence, one must not disturb him now by speaking to him of earning his living or marrying. He will not think of it for a few years. For now, let him devote himself, in a fruitful manner, to study!

As you ask me, I will mention your name near the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, so that your health may improve and so that you may know material opulence.

The merit of having raised a son who studies with ardor the Torah of Hashem and puts into practice its teachings will protect you in all the domains where this is necessary.

נתקבל מכתבו מט״ז אייר בו כותב שקשה להקים בית ספר או חדר

של חרדים ולכן הילדים לומדים במקומות שהם נגד דת ישראל.

נבהלתי לקרוא ידיעה כזו ,בזמן שידוע לכל המסירות נפש שהיתה

ליהודים כדי שילדיהם יקבלו חינוך כזה ,שיהי׳ לא רק שהוא לא נגד דת

ישראל ,שזה יכול להתפרש שאפשר להסתפק בחינוך נייטרלי ,אלא

השקיעו כוחות עד מסירת נפש שהחינוך יהי׳ דוקא ברוח דת ישראל,

ובפרט לפי מה שכותב שהוא הרב של הכפר ,הרי אחריות הרב אינה רק

לפסוק שאלות כשבאים לשאול אותו ,אלא העיקר הוא הרי להשפיע על

הקהילה שהם ידעו שצריך לשאול שאלות .במילים אחרות ,שהם ידעו

שנשמת כל יהודי עמדה לפני הר סיני וקבלו את התורה בהקדמת נעשה

לנשמע ,וקבלו מפי הגבורה את הציווי של אנכי הוי׳ אלקיך הכולל כל

רמ״ח מצוות עשה ,והציווי לא יהי׳ לך אלקים אחרים הכולל כל שס״ה

מצוות לא תעשה .והשי״ת יצליחו בעבודה זו ,ובפרט בימי ההכנה למתן

תורה שכל הענינים שהיו במתן תורה מתעוררים מדי שנה בימים אלו.
