Greetings and blessing,

I received your letter of the past week, and I observe with pleasure that you have, in the Yeshivah* of which you are the supervisor, "all that is necessary for the dormitory and moral education." Such a serious assertion is formulated after a reflection on the situation of this Yeshivah*, on its needs, and, above all, on the education of the young men in our era.

You write to me, indeed, that you are their spiritual supervisor, responsible for their ardor in the study of Torah. For our Sages, alluding to all eras, explain at tractate Shabbos 31a that "yiras Hashem must be his treasure... and, if it is not the case, better not to elevate oneself." In this orphan generation, we have observed and we still observe, with our eyes of flesh and in an immediate manner, to what extent this assertion is verified.

In consequence of all that, I was surprised by the conclusion of your letter, in which you tell me that these young men study Gemara*, Chumash*, and halachah*, but you do not evoke moral duties.

I have good hope that there is here only an omission in your letter, but not an effective lack. You know, indeed, that in what concerns education, a lack, even very passing, can have for consequence a situation that is impossible to redress and a damaging insufficiency.

As you have surely been able to observe yourself, if, in previous eras, one could be content to study Mussar*, life and concrete practice have made the proof that young men endowed with discernment must also have a reasoned study that permits them to take consciousness of their moral obligation. What is more, the latter must have for effect to multiply the light and not to make them reflect on the blackness of darkness. The teaching of Chassidus* permits obtaining such a result.

You write to me that you have studied Chassidus*, and I therefore have good hope that these few lines will bring you all the necessary explanation. May Hashem accord you success in order to form disciples who fear Hashem sincerely. It is thus that their wisdom will be able to maintain itself.

With my blessing to receive the Torah in a joyous and profound manner,
