Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of Thursday of parshas* Bamidbar, in which you write to me that you wish to be a Chassid* Lubavitch. And your friend also shares this desire. You want to know what its conditions are and what is fitting to do.

The conditions are the following. One must study Chassidus*. Our Sages say that "the deed is essential and not the study." One must therefore also put into practice its teachings and its customs.

We received the Torah thanks to the proclamation: "Na'aseh venishma" ("We shall do, and we shall hear"). Now, it is the same for each part that constitutes this Torah, whatever the level of interpretation to which it attaches itself. It is necessary, here too, to say: "Na'aseh venishma."

As you know, our Sages say that "one who says he has not made effort and has nevertheless known success, do not believe him. One who says he has made efforts and has known success, believe him." When one truly desires it, "one comes to the aid of the one who wishes to purify himself."

Doubtless you already study Tanya*, and you read Tehillim* every morning after the prayer.

May Hashem accord you success.

במענה על מכתבו מה' במדבר, בו כותב שרוצה להיות חסיד ליובאוויטש וכן גם חבר שלו רוצה בכזה, ורוצים לדעת התנאים ומה יש לעשות.

הנה התנאים הם ללמוד תורת החסידות וע"פ מרז"ל לא המדרש עיקר אלא המעשה להתנהג בהדרכותי' ומנהגי'. וכמובן שכמו שבקבלת התורה שזכו לזה דוקא ע"י הקדמת נעשה לנשמע, הרי כן הוא ג"כ באיזה חלק מפרד"ס שבתורה שגם בזה צ"ל הקדמת נעשה לנשמע וכבר ידוע פסק רז"ל לא יגעת ומצאת אל תאמין יגעת ומצאת, ואם רוצים באמת הנה הבא לטהר מסייעין אותו.

בטח לומד תניא גם עתה וכן אומר בכל יום אחר תפלת שחרית שיעור

תהלים - כפי שנחלק התהלים לימי החדש - והשי"ת יצליחו.
