Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2675 — Hagahot on Manuscripts

Volume 9 · Letter 55

B"H

21 Iyar 5714,
Brooklyn.

Greetings and blessing,

I reply to your letter of Wednesday. I address to you my remarks. Obviously, this is not an approbation of your book, for I do not have the habit of giving them.

Moreover, if one does not suppress from the text what, in my view, can lead the greatest number into error, I do not authorize you to mention the fact that I have read the manuscript, so that no one may think that I associate myself with such an enterprise.

With my blessing,

Remarks

A preliminary point will be specified:

A) Books written in the current language (in Yiddish or in English) are also destined for ordinary persons. One must therefore make disappear all that could lead them, according to their perception of things, to denigrate Torah and mitzvos*.

B) One must also set aside all that requires a long or profound explanation that it is impossible to give within the framework of such a work.

C) One cannot publish what leads the ordinary reader to think that there exist two or several Toros within the Jewish people, that is, all that is the expression of a controversy.

D) One must separate the wheat from the chaff, that is, not introduce ideas totally extraneous, for the reader compares them to what is explained, elsewhere, in this book.

E) One must set aside all that is linked to a party, that is, all the subjects treated by the parties in Yisrael, and on which they have divergent opinions.

In function of all this, I will now go through the pages in order:

Page 2:

It is necessary to suppress the passage explaining that a custom suspends the application of the law. Ordinary persons in America will, on this basis, neglect dozens of principles established by the Shulchan Aruch*, by reason of the customs they have adopted. Obviously, they will not consult the books explaining why this is so, and which are the customs of which it is said that minhag (custom) is the anagram of Gehinnom* (gehenna), as the Sdei Chemed explains, in his rules, in the article "Minhag."

Page 4 and following:

When you write the Name of Hashem in Yiddish or in English, it is necessary to write "G.t" or "G.d" and not the Name in its entirety. According to several opinions, among the latter Sages, this Name, when it is written integrally, is subsequently considered as sacred.

Page 7:

You speak of three stars (which permit establishing the end of Shabbos). It is established that one does not know how to distinguish the large from the small. It is therefore preferable to write, for example: "When night falls."

Page 8:

The kiddush* recited over milk, even if one can find a reference justifying this practice, remains a particularly surprising practice. The Birkei Yosef and the Sha'arei Teshuvah, cited by the Mishnah Berurah at chapter 272, clearly establish that one cannot recite kiddush* and havdalah* over milk.

Page 10:

You will consult chapter 285, according to which the mitzvah* of reading each verse of the sidra twice and the Targum once applies on erev Shabbos*. It is uniquely in case of force majeure that it can be deferred to Shabbos.

Same page:

At the end of the summer, it happens that two chapters (of Pirkei Avos) are read on the same Shabbos.

Page 11:

It is necessary to suppress the passage evoking the havdalah* that would be recited over milk. It must also be specified that the latter is introduced by the verse: "Behold, Kel* of my salvation."

Page 13:

It is forbidden to carry (on Shabbos) not only in the public domain, but also in the karmelis*. You must also suppress what you say regarding the making of the eruv*, for the laws on this subject are very complicated. A reader taking knowledge of what you have written will not understand them. It is the same for that which encloses large spaces. These laws do not really have their place in this book, and it is therefore preferable to omit them. Indeed, it is a matter of adjoining to the city the houses that find themselves outside it, which presupposes several conditions.

Page 14:

You identify Shammai the Elder with Beis Shammai. This is difficult to understand, since it is a question of Hillel and Shammai themselves, but not of their disciples.

Page 15:

You say that Shabbos addresses itself to all men. This is the contrary of halachah*, according to which a non-Jew who keeps Shabbos is liable to death. It is therefore necessary to suppress this mention, as well as the one that compares Shabbos to a spice, for the simple reader will not understand what this means.

Pages 16, 17, 18:

One must not speak of the Sambatyon (name of an impassable river beyond which the ten lost tribes have entrenched themselves). Indeed, there is a great controversy to determine where it finds itself, while you write, as if it were an evidence, that it is in the south of Ethiopia. Moreover, numerous are those who contest the narratives of the voyages of Rabbi Gershon (who locates the Sambatyon in Ethiopia), all the more that he concludes his work by citing the verse "you shall not light a fire (in all your dwellings on the day of Shabbos)" and gives the same heretical interpretation as the Karaites.

Page 20:

It is fitting to suppress the word "precise," for the new moon (which corresponds to Rosh Chodesh*) such as we calculate it is an approximation, but not its real time. The maftir* of Shabbos Rosh Chodesh* begins with "And on the day of Shabbos" and not with "And on your Rosh Chodesh*." Likewise, one must not speak of "those who are observant," since it is a question of a custom mentioned in the Shulchan Aruch*.

Page 21:

One cannot present the blessing of the moon as a simple custom. Likewise, one must not associate it with the baraisa* according to which one pronounces a blessing for the sun, the moon, and the stars. For most commentators, this is not the blessing of the moon that is pronounced each month. At the end of this page, you say that an additional month is added once every three years. This is not exact. It is the case for the third, sixth, eighth, eleventh, fourteenth, seventeenth, and nineteenth years (of a cycle of nineteen years).

Page 22/1:

You say that the blessing of the moon is recited when the latter regains its original place, from which it draws its light and its heat. This is not exact. You also say that the equinox of spring is on the fourth night of the month of Nissan. This is not true either. It is on Wednesday, the fourth day of the week, and not the fourth day of the month. And it is not from there that the sun draws its light, as the laws of the sanctification of the new month, of the Rambam, in particular explain.

Page 22/2:

You define the month of Bul (that of Marcheshvan) as the one in the course of which the grass is dry, and as that of strong rains. It is clear that these two affirmations contradict one another.

Page 22/3:

It is necessary to suppress this entire paragraph, for there is a great controversy on the manner in which it must be interpreted.

Page 24:

The explanation of the labors that are forbidden during the festivals requires a long development, in order to define each category. Thus, the commentators of the Talmud and the Rambam specify why certain labors are permitted, while others are forbidden. This work does not have for its aim to expose all these explanations.

Page 25:

You say that in Eretz Yisrael, the second day of festival, added in galus*, is not celebrated. There can result from this a confusion for the ordinary reader, who will come to neglect this second day. Our Sages themselves specify that such a risk exists. One must therefore not at all speak of this in a book in Yiddish or in English. This does not concern these countries (in which one speaks these languages). There is therefore no reason to evoke the customs of Eretz Yisrael in the matter.

Page 26:

You say that the eruv* permitting cooking (during festival days, of dishes for Shabbos) is instituted by the Geonim. I am particularly surprised by this, for the Mishnah* already speaks of it. For the same reasons, it is necessary to suppress what is said of the different ways of putting on tefillin* during Chol HaMoed*.

Page 27:

You say that on Issru Chag, one does not say the psalm "Lamenatzeach Binginos." This is very surprising. You doubtless mean to say "Lamenatzeach Ya'ancha."

Page 28:

You define chametz* as containing an acid. First, this is false. Moreover, errors and confusions can result from it. It is the same for what you say of fruit juice (for making the matzos) and of wine made with raisins (to be used during the Pesach Seder*).

Page 30:

You conclude by saying that the count of the Omer* was given for Bnei Yisrael* residing in the Holy Land. This is astonishing, especially for the Decisors who consider this mitzvah*, even at the present time, as being instituted by the Torah, including outside Eretz Yisrael.

Page 31:

You say that during Shabbos Chol HaMoed*, six persons are called up to the reading of the first Sefer Torah*. This is surprising (concretely, seven persons are then called up).

Page 32:

You link Lag BaOmer* to the revolt of Bar Kochba. This is the contrary of what the Talmud says, although such an affirmation appears in the works of the Haskalah.

Page 35:

It is necessary to suppress the narrative of Rav Chaim of Brisk and that of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak, which is on page 36, for the previously cited reasons.

Page 39:

For the same reason, it is necessary to suppress the various practices that exist concerning the trees (that some have the custom of placing in the synagogue) on Shavuos.

Page 41:

It seems to me that all the communities have already suppressed, during the Haftarah, the mention according to which "this affirmation is exact."

Page 42:

Concerning Dovid, it is necessary to suppress the distinction that is made between Mo'avi and Mo'avis (between masculine and feminine — a precision that is not necessary in the framework of this work; the verse says, indeed, that a man issued from Moav cannot convert to Yiddishkeit, while a woman issued from Moav can. Such was precisely the case of Rus, ancestor of Dovid).

Page 45:

It is necessary to suppress this passage, for this book does not have for its object to weaken the practice consisting of reading the Tikkun during the night of Shavuos.

Page 50:

You cite previous works according to which Rabbi Amnon decided himself what would be his own punishment. It is necessary to ask whether it really was so. Indeed, it is forbidden to cause harm to oneself. And one knows that various elements transmitted by tradition are subject to caution and do not correspond to reality. Various sources permit establishing this.

Pages 51 and 52:

You say that Gedaliah was assassinated (this is the reason one fasts on the day after Rosh Hashanah*) by members of the family of Tzidkiyahu the Kohen*. You also say that Rashi, in his commentary on tractate Shabbos, evokes the custom of "striking" the kapparos* (on erev Yom Kippur). All this is surprising. For the reasons invoked in the introduction, it is necessary to suppress, on page 52, the opinion according to which the custom of kapparos* is a usage of the people of Emor.

Page 53:

You envisage that the prayer of Minchah* be said just after midday. According to some, such a prayer would be useless. It must be fixed at least a half hour after that (that is, a half hour after the middle of the day). It is also necessary to suppress from this page the opinion of those who oppose the reading of Kol Nidrei. Indeed, this practice is currently accepted by all the Ashkenazic communities. Likewise, you say that one must wish each other a good year on the evening of Yom Kippur. This is very astonishing.

Page 55:

It is necessary to suppress the narrative of Rabbi David of Lelov. Indeed, in all the United States, it is customary to go to the shul* on Yom Kippur. One must therefore not relate stories that would justify not doing so. For the same reason, it is necessary to suppress also the previous narrative.

Page 59:

The movements (that one makes with the four species of the festival of Sukkos) are also upward and downward, not uniquely in the four cardinal directions.

Page 61:

It is necessary to suppress the commentary of Rashi which speaks of an independent festival (regarding Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah), during which one does not eat in the sukkah*, for it concerns essentially Eretz Yisrael, where there is no doubt regarding the fixing of the festivals (which is the reason why one celebrates only one day there).

Page 64:

You say that Chanukah is always celebrated until 2 Teves. This is not exact, for Kislev sometimes has twenty-nine and sometimes thirty days.

Page 66:

One must not mix the commentary given by the books of the Greats of our people, of the previous generations, regarding the phrase "A great miracle happened there" (the four letters that are the initials of this phrase — Nun, Gimmel, Heh, Shin — figure on the four faces of the dreidel of Chanukah) with the meaning of its initials in Yiddish or in English.

Page 70:

One must not mix the custom of planting a tree on Tu BiShvat with the practices defined by the Shulchan Aruch*. It is therefore necessary to make this mention disappear from the book, so that it effectively addresses itself to all.

Page 73:

A priori, it is necessary to strive to give the half-shekel during the fast of Esther and not on Purim. Likewise, it is necessary to make disappear from this page the citation of our Sages according to which one must be drunk on Purim.

Page 74:

Shushan Purim is observed, even at the present time, in several places in Eretz Yisrael, and not uniquely in Yerushalayim.

P.S.: So that you may more easily locate my remarks, I have made annotations in pencil on your manuscript. Obviously, these will erase without difficulty.
