Volume 9 · Letter 38 · To: distingué ‘Hassid qui craint D.ieu
B"H
16 Iyar 5714,
Brooklyn.
To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,
Rav Dan HaKohen (Rav D. Cohen, of Bengardan, in Tunisia),
Greetings and blessing,
I duly received your letter of 11 Iyar. As you asked me, I will mention all those whom you cite, in a propitious moment, when I find myself near the tziyun* of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us.
I am surprised that you do not tell me, in your letter, whether these persons have charged you to write to me, in conformity with the teaching of our Sages, according to which "the emissary of a man is like the man himself," or rather whether you do so on your own initiative, by a sentiment of love toward your fellow, which is "a great principle of the Torah," as the Alter Rebbe — author of the Tanya* and Decisor of the hidden part of the Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and Decisor of the revealed part of the Torah — emphasizes.
According to him, ahavas Yisrael* is the instrument of ahavas Hashem*. Now, the mitzvah* of loving Hashem is at the origin of all the positive injunctions of the Torah, among which figures also yiras Shamayim*, which conditions all the prohibitions of the Torah. As a result, ahavas Hashem* is indeed the source of all the mitzvos* of the Torah. When you have good news concerning these persons, you will kindly communicate them to me. I thank you.
At the end of your letter, you evoke the reward that is due to me for this intervention. Know that the reward of a mitzvah* is the mitzvah* itself. As a result, you must redouble ardor to draw close the hearts of the sons and daughters of Yisrael to our Father Who is in Heaven. You must act toward them with "the right hand (which) draws close" (with benevolence), with ahavas Yisrael*. If you do so with the abnegation and the devotion that are fitting, you will know success, beyond doubt, and that will be my reward.
You surely have a fixed time for the study of the profound part of the Torah. You correspond with me, and I will therefore ask you to study the books of Chabad, beginning with the holy Tanya*.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe shlita*, the secretary,
P.S.: In your letter, you tell me that those for whom you solicit a blessing find themselves in Djerba. You doubtless allude to the city of Cherba and to the holy community that is found there. I would like to know whether one studies there the profound teaching of the Torah, and, if so, in what manner.
