Greetings and blessing,
I reply to your letter of 11 Iyar, in which you inform me of your difficulties in understanding the revealed part of the Torah. You impute the reason to the fact that your teacher does not perfectly master the Holy Tongue. Now, as you know, our Sages say: "One who tells you he has not made effort and has nonetheless known success, do not believe him. One who tells you he has made efforts but has not known success, do not believe him."
In my opinion, this also applies in your case. When a Yid* is animated by the desire to study Torah, much more, to do so by penetrating himself with yiras Shamayim*, the yetzer hara* rises against his initiative, by various and varied means. Obviously, it tries first to explain to the man that this in no way depends upon him, but uniquely upon another person. There is therefore nothing to do, and one has oneself already realized all that was conceivable.
Then, if this subterfuge functions, chas veshalom*, a profoundly negative consequence can be expected from it, not only for the study of Torah, but also for the practice of mitzvos*, including in concrete action. Indeed, the yetzer hara*, as I was saying, demonstrates, in different ways, that all this also applies to the practice of the commandments.
When a war breaks out, it is easier to vanquish at the beginning than later, when the enemy has already strengthened himself. The holy Zohar*, vol. 3, page 87b, commenting the verse "You shall rise before the elder," emphasizes that the yetzer hara* "grows old" in the personality of the man. The counsel of the Torah is therefore the following. Before such an "elder," one must rise, and so it is in your case.
You must, as quickly as possible, suppress and make disappear these arguments, emanating from your yetzer hara*. The holy Tanya* indicates in what way one can succeed in this, when it comments the affirmation of our Sages according to which "one must always excite the yetzer hatov* against the yetzer hara*." In this way, you will know success in your study of Torah and in your practice of mitzvos*, thanks to the yiras Shamayim* that you possess.
It is possible that some problems of communication may intervene in the relation between the rector of the yeshivah* and the students. Nonetheless, all this is perfectly negligible compared to the great happiness that a Yid* can conceive in studying our holy Torah, which is the Wisdom and the Will of HaKadosh Baruch Hu*. And the result is in measure with the effort.
Perhaps some of your friends also consider that the reason invoked is an obstacle to their study of Torah and to the ardor that is fitting to undertake it. You will kindly transmit to them the content of the present. You will surely find the words to do so.
With my blessing,
For the Rebbe shlita*, the secretary,
