To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, of generous conduct, issued from an illustrious family,

Rav Sh. Z. (Schneur Zalman Shazar, who was subsequently president of the State of Israel),

Greetings and blessing,

I was satisfied by your visit last week. Rav Chadakov (director of the Rebbe's secretariat) informed me of the progress of the project relating to our research work (led by Sh. Z. Shazar) on the writings, the discourses, and the books of the Alter Rebbe. I am sure that there will be fulfilled in you the explanation of our Sages according to which: "To one who begins to put a mitzvah* into practice, one says to bring it to its term," and that all this will have a positive outcome.

Much more, the name underscores a connection (the first names of Sh. Z. Shazar are the same as those of the Alter Rebbe), since you bear that of your grandfather, who himself bears that of the Alter Rebbe. For someone such as you, it is useless to describe at length the great merit that flows from all this.

In accordance with your proposal, I enclose for you a letter for Mr. Shapiro, with a list, presenting the plan of our present research. As you will see, we have included in it, so that it be more complete, a specific study on the biography of the Alter Rebbe and the bibliography of the books and commentaries written, regarding the work of the Alter Rebbe, by the masters of Chabad who succeeded him and by his chassidim*.

May Hashem confer upon you success, and may this project succeed, so that on the day of the hilula* of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai (on Lag BaOmer*, four days after the writing of this letter), it be possible to begin the realization of this important project, with the help of Hashem.

נעמה לי הזדמנות ביקורו בשבוע העבר, והרב חדקוב שי' מסר לי ממהלך הדברים בענין תכנית עבודתנו המחקרית באוצר כתביו מאמריו וספריו של אדמו"ר הזקן. ובטוח אני שיקויים בו מרז"ל המתחיל במצוה אומרים לו גמור, ויגמור הענין לפועל טוב. ובפרט אשר שמא גרים, שמע"כ שי' נקרא ע"ש אביו זקנו שנקרא ע"ש רבינו הזקן. והאריכות בגודל הזכות שקשור בזה למותר הוא לדכוותי'.

על פי הצעת מע"כ שי', מוסג"פ המכתב למר שפירא בצירוף רשימת תכנית מחקרנו זה. כפי שיראה, הכנסנו לתכנית זו, לשלימות הדבר, גם פרק מחקרי בתולדות ימי אדמו"ר הזקן וביבליאוגרפיא של ספרים ופירושים שנתחברו על ספרי אדמו"ר הזקן על ידי נשיאי חב"ד הבאים אחריו וחסידיו.

וחפץ ה' בידו יצליח להוציא הענין לפועל ממש, וליום ההילולא דרשב"י נעשה התחלה טובה למלוי תכנית נעלה זו בעזר השי"ת.
