To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav David (Rav D. Helman),

Greetings and blessing,

I duly received your letter, written at the conclusion of Shabbos Emor, and I was content to ascertain that my letter gave you pleasure, although I described the situation as it is, without seeking to please you.

I was satisfied to take knowledge of the distribution of Matzah Shemurah* that you organized. You considered others with breadth, and you conferred this merit upon them. If I had known from the outset, I would have addressed to you a greater quantity, but it is useless to complain of the past, and everything depends on merit.

May Hashem grant that what we still receive by emunah*, and for which we therefore have need of the food of emunah* (the matzah), be integrated into our understanding and our knowledge as early as next year. Thus, our emunah* will be able to serve for a higher objective (for that which one will not yet have understood).

Various texts of Chassidus* explain that there exist several levels of emunah*. When a man develops his intellect, he can therefore grasp what he previously accepted by emunah*. For all that, there are still certain notions that he will not succeed in understanding for the moment, and in which he will believe with a pure emunah*, while one who is greater than him will succeed in understanding them. The latter will therefore be able to grasp what the first conceives himself only by his emunah*.

You tell me that you continue to publish explanations of our Sages in various journals, and I am satisfied. You will kindly, in the future, address me these press cuttings. I thank you in advance.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו ממוצש"ק אמור ונהניתי במה שגרמתי לו נחת במכתבי אף שכתבתי הדבר כמו שהוא מבלי הוספה כדי לגרום נחת...

נהניתי ממ"ש אודות חלוקת המצה שמורה, ואשר עינו היתה טובה בשל אחרים לזכותם ג"כ, ולו ידעתי מראש הייתי שולח יותר, אבל אין צועקים על העבר והכל תלוי במזל, ויה"ר אשר לשנה הבאה, הנה כל הענינים שמקבלים אנו אותם עדיין באמונה, ובמילא סיוע בזה מיכלא דמהימנותא, יתיישבו אז בשכל ודעת, וישתמשו בכח האמונה לענינים יותר נעלים. וע"ד המבואר בכ"מ בדא"ח שכמה דרגות באמונה, וכשמתעלה האדם בכח שכלו, הרי תופס בשכל מה שאתמול הי' עדיין אצלו רק באמונה, ואעפ"כ נשארו אצלו כמה ענינים, שלע"ע קצר שכלו להשיגם ומאמין בהם באמונה פשוטה. והוא ע"ד הנראה גם עתה, שילד קטן אמיתית כמה דברים הוא אצלו באמונה, מה שהגדול מבינם ויודעם. ובמילא מובן שאצל הגדול יותר מגדול זה - מובן בשכל מה שהגדול נזקק לאמונה שלו.
