Igrot Kodesh · Letter 2642 — Grief & Loss

Volume 9 · Letter 20 · To: grand Rav

B"H

8 Iyar 5714,
Brooklyn.

To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, multiplying positive accomplishments for Torah and mitzvos*, of broad knowledge,

Rav Chananya Yom Tov Lipa (Rav H. Y. T. L. Deutsch),

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your seforim*, the five volumes of Taharas Yom Tov*. You also announce to me that you are preparing the publication of the sixth volume.

They are based on the Yesod Yosef*, which deals in particular with the observance of the bris* (of Avraham Avinu, that of milah*) and with the manner of repairing its violations (in particular, hotza'as zera levatalah*).

Chassidim* do not have the custom of publishing seforim* specifically to explain the reason for this aveirah*, nor even of speaking of it in public or with broad dissemination, and one may justify this according to the explanation of the Tzemach Tzedek* (see Igros Kodesh of the Tzemach Tzedek, letter no. 26) that the thought or fear of the aveirah* may naturally provoke an emission of seed, just as may reflection upon the aveirah*. You will also consult the Tzemach Tzedek*, Sha'ar HaMiluim, ch. 62.

In this country, this aveirah* has spread widely in certain circles, which even attempt to legitimize it. Moreover, certain doctors, in the service of paganism, permitting what is forbidden, prescribe such practices to those who consult them and ask them to accustom themselves to them. They mock those who forbid them, and explain that they are not only permitted but even desirable, chas veshalom*.

And, because of our many sins, no one intervenes to protest and condemn them. No one explains how one weakens one's body, diminishes one's forces, and loses one's life by acting in this manner. Furthermore, one renders one's neshamah* impure and provokes its fall, in the expression of the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and the Shulchan Aruch*.

This aveirah* is particularly grave, much more so than forbidden unions, from the point of view of the magnitude and the importance of the impurity that results from it, in a considerable proportion, as ch. 7 of the Tanya* says, and as the Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of Parshas Shelach, explains its immense gravity.

There is therefore reason to think that it is necessary to print and disseminate the gravity of this aveirah* and of the defilement that results from it. It is also necessary to speak of it, if one can thereby preserve young Yidden* from the fall. One must above all reinforce and increase the vigilance of teachers, professors and rashei yeshivah*, that they may take consciousness of this situation. For, in large part, it depends upon them to rectify so deplorable a situation. Consequently, the responsibility for it incumbs upon them. For one who has the possibility of intervening (and does not do so is considered as if he himself had sinned; see Tanya ch. 1)…

May Hashem grant that you know success. You will confer merit upon the multitude, and you will show how to judge the oppressors — that is, how to have pity on them, to have pity on the sparks of Holiness that are oppressed by the actions of men, as the Mitteler Rebbe* says in his Siddur, commenting on the verse: "He renders judgment to the oppressors," until Hashem gathers His people, Israel, who is dispersed, by our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and in our days, Amen.

With my blessing for success,

In your sefer*, you also deal with the mikvah*, and I attach a copy of a list of instructions given by the Rebbe Rashab* (printed at the end of Taharas Mayim, the work on the mikvah* of Rav Telushkin, and in the addenda of the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, Kehot editions, vol. 5 and 6, p. 910-78), father of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, when a mikvah* was built in his city.

As a mark of appreciation, I will formulate some remarks that came to me in leafing through your sefer*.

Vol. 1, p. 1, on the male organ:

It must be recalled and emphasized the assertion of Chazal*, in Maseches Yevamos 53b, that this organ can harden only by the full will of the man. For there exists a direct link between this organ and the brain. And the reason is well known. There are nerves, very fine, that assure the connection between them and unite them to the point of forming only one and the same member. You will consult the addenda of Torah Or* of the Alter Rebbe*, at the end of Parshas Vayechi, which develop a long explanation on this subject.

Vol. 1, p. 87:

You will consult the Or HaChaim of Rav A. L. Epstein, great scholar and kabbalist, av beis din* of Königsberg, who defines the emission of seed in vain as a transgression of the prohibition: "Lo tin'af." For the moment, I have seen no one else who defends the same position.

Vol. 2, p. 34, concerning the reason why the Torah does not clearly mention the prohibition of provoking the loss of seed in vain:

See the Or HaChaim previously cited. The end of ch. 7 of the Tanya* gives the reason. For it is possible, by the appropriate teshuvah*, to reintegrate into the domain of Holiness the vitality that has been enclosed in the forces of evil because of this aveirah*. It is not the same for the other prohibitions of the Torah (for example, when a forbidden union has resulted in the birth of a child, whose existence will continue beyond the teshuvah* of the father). You will consult the Panim laTorah.

Vol. 2, p. 88, concerning the punishment of gilgul*:

I am surprised that you reproduce nothing of the teaching of the Arizal* and his disciples, after the latter was revealed. Moreover, among the "eight gates" of the Arizal*, one of them is integrally consecrated to this subject (gilgul*). It is the Sha'ar HaGilgulim* (literally, the gate of reincarnations).

Furthermore, various other texts of the writings of the Arizal* also comment on this idea. You will consult the end of the introduction of Rabbi Chaim Vital* to the Sha'ar HaHakdamos (literally, the gate of introductions).

Vol. 3, at the beginning, concerning the reparations of this aveirah*:

See ch. 7 of the Tanya* and Iggeres HaTeshuvah* of the Alter Rebbe*, ch. 3 and 9.

Vol. 3, p. 111, concerning the fact of removing the ring from the lulav* on Hoshana Rabbah after the reading of Hallel*:

One may question this. Our minhag* (see Sefer HaMinhagim Chabad, p. 68) is to remove it before Hallel*. This is also what the Bayis Chadash says, Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim, ch. 664. You will consult the reason he gives. This is also the view of the Darkei Chaim VeShalom, at ch. 791.

Vol. 4, at the beginning, concerning the reparation by the fact of studying the secrets of the Torah:

Insofar as this could be of any necessity, we may deduce another reason from the assertion of the Arizal* that, precisely in these last generations, it is permitted and it is a mitzvah* to reveal this wisdom, that of Kabbalah*. In the introduction previously cited, Rabbi Chaim Vital* explains:

"All depends on the manner in which one studies this Wisdom. By not doing so, we delay and prevent the rebuilding of the Beis HaMikdash*. The misfortune comes from the negligence of this study. For Hashem conceives pleasure from what He has created in His world only when His children study, here below, the secrets of the Torah, and not only its plain meaning. Man was created only to study Kabbalah*."

He cites and comments on the words of the Zohar*, vol. 1, pp. 26 and 27, p. 118a, vol. 2, p. 247a. You will consult his long development.

Vol. 4, from p. 67:

You will see, for all this, the responsa Tzemach Tzedek*, section Orach Chaim, ch. 139, Sha'ar HaMiluim ch. 45, and his commentaries on Maseches Berachos, ch. 3, p. 5a.

Vol. 5, at the beginning, regarding the verse "And Yosef came":

You will see the Derech Mitzvosecha* of the Tzemach Tzedek*, vol. 2, from p. 277b, which makes a long analysis on this subject.

Vol. 5, p. 159, ch. 51, par. 1:

You will see, on this subject, the responsa Tzofnas Pa'aneach of Rav Yosef Rosin of Rogatchov*, ch. 25.

Vol. 5, at the end, p. 182, concerning the fact that integrity extends also to thought, and one may ask where one finds an allusion to this:

One may find this allusion in the Zohar*, vol. 3, p. 230a, which says: "One must be inwardly conformable to what one is outwardly. One must be intact in one's inner members as in one's outer members."

On p. 165b, a deduction is made from this verse for Noach, "a righteous man, who was tamim*."
