Greetings and blessing,
I am responding to your letter of Thursday of Parshas Emor, in which you make known to me the name you have given your son.
May Hashem grant that, just as you brought him into the bris* (of milah*, that of Avraham Avinu), you also lead him to Torah, to the chuppah*, and to ma'asim tovim*.
You ask me what are the segulos* (to draw down divine blessings upon the child). You will have the mezuzos* of your house verified, that they all be kosher*, as well as your tefillin*. Doubtless you also wear the tefillin* of Rabbeinu Tam*, and if not, you will do so from now on. You will therefore have them verified as well.
You yourself and your wife will give, every Monday and Thursday morning, a few coins to tzedakah*. Furthermore, your wife surely gives some before lighting the candles on the eve of Shabbos* and the festivals.
For tzedakah* is a favorable practice, which protects in all situations, as it is said: "He clothed Himself in tzedakah* as in armor." You know the explanation that Chazal* give on this subject (each coin constitutes a scale of this armor, which assures the protection of the one who wears it). It is also explained in Iggeres HaKodesh* of the Alter Rebbe*, in chapter 3.

במענה על מכתבו מה' אמור אשר קרא שם בנם הנולך להם... שי'. הנה יה"ר מהשי"ת שכשם שהכניסוהו לברית כן יכניסוהו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים.
ומה שכותב בענין סגולה, הנה יבדקו המזוזות בביתם שיהיו כולן כשרות וכן את התפילין שלו, ובודאי מניח או עכ"פ יניח מעתה תפילין דרבנו תם ובמילא יבדוק גם אותם, והוא וזוגתו שיחיו יפרישו בכל יום שני וחמישי בבקר איזה פרוטות לצדקה נוסף על מה שבודאי זוגתו תחי' מפרישה לצדקה קודם הדלקת הנרות בכל עש"ק וערב יום טוב. והרי צדקה סגולה היא שמגינה בפני כל וכמ"ש וילבש צדקה כשריון וידוע דרז"ל על זה שנתבארה גם כן באגרת הקדש לרבנו הזקן סי' ג'. והשי"ת יזכהו לבשר טוב תכה"י.
