To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs,

Rav Yosef (Rav Yosef Flyer),

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of 4 Iyar, with what it contained — checks for Kollel Chabad* in the Holy Land, which I have sent in these days to their final beneficiaries. I also appreciated the eagerness with which you addressed them to me, without waiting for the others.

How extraordinary are the words of the Alter Rebbe*, on the subject of the akeidah* (of Yitzchak by Avraham), the event that serves as reference and symbol not only for Bnei Yisrael* but also for the other nations, and which is commonly interpreted in the following manner: an aged father delivers his only son to the akeidah*, on the order of HaKadosh Baruch Hu*.

Then comes the Alter Rebbe*, who emphasizes that such is not at all the inner content of this akeidah*. He says that "the akeidah* itself is not so great a test, given the great elevation of our father Avraham. For Hashem addressed Himself to him and said: 'Please take your son.'

"In fact, his quality was the following. Our father Avraham executed it with marvelous eagerness. He gave proof of his joy and his good will. Chazal* deduce from this that it must be the same for the practice of all the mitzvos* in general, and in particular of tzedakah*, which surpasses all the others."

You will also consult Iggeres HaKodesh*, ch. 21. You may deduce from these words the value of eagerness, which is greater, more important and more wondrous than the akeidah* itself. For one such as you, it is useless to say more.

You have surely received, in its time, my preceding letter.

בנועם הנני מאשר קבלת מכתבו מד' אייר עם המוסגר בו ההמחאות לכולל חב"ד באה"ק ת"ו שנשלחים ימים אלו למטרתם, ונהניתי גם מזריזותו דמר בשילוח הנ"ל מבלי לחכות על השאר.

ומה נפלאו דברי רבנו הזקן בנוגע לענין העקדה מאורע המשמש דוגמא וסמל לא רק לבני ישראל אלא גם לאו"ה ועמא דבר מפרש תוכן הענין שאב זקן מוסר לעקדה את בנו יחידו על פי ציוויו של הקב"ה. ובא רבנו הזקן ומעמיק לבאר שלא זהו פנימיות הדברים, ובלשונו הק' "העקדה עצמה אינה נחשבה כ"כ לנסיון גדול לערך מעלת אברהם אבינו ע"ה בשגם כי ה' דיבר בו קח נא את בנך כו' רק שא"א ע"ה עשה זאת בזריזות נפלאה להראות שמחתו וחפצו כו' וממנו למדו רז"ל לקיום כל המצות בכלל ובפרט מעשה הצדקה העולה על כולנה" (עיין אגרת הקדש סי' כ"א) ומזה מובנת מעלת הזריזות אשר עוד יותר גדולה רבה ונפלאה היא אפילו ממעלת העקדה, והאריכות לדכוותי' בודאי אך למותר.
