Greetings and blessing,

I have just received your letter of Rosh Chodesh* Iyar, in which you write to me that, given the conditions of the time and the place, your mission (consisting in raising funds for the Lubavitch institutions) has been crowned with success in this country.

I am surprised that you do not give me more details than that. In any case, you surely have knowledge of the teaching of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, which you must have heard, that the mission of an emissary of the Sages consists in harvesting material goods and sowing spirituality. One can deduce from his words that these two points are linked.

You speak to me of your son, to whom the doctors prescribe a removal of the tonsils. He awaits the call of the doctor who will perform this intervention. Before doing so, you will ask him his opinion once again. For everything depends on the climate of the moment and the day of this removal. Furthermore, several doctors now consider that there is no reason to operate on the tonsils, as was done formerly.

In any case, may Hashem grant that it be in a good and fruitful moment, that you lead him to Torah, to the chuppah*, and to ma'asim tovim*.

As for the means of assuring your livelihood, one must strive to find it by working in the domain of Chabad. First of all, this is easier for chassidim*, whether they are conscious of it or not. In this way, their action can be more fruitful. From the spiritual point of view, it is clear that our holy masters infuse forces into their disciples and into chassidim* in general. Globally, they provide for their needs. Thus Moshe Rabbeinu said: "Where shall I find meat (for all this people)?" — though this preoccupation in no way corresponded to his level, as the Likkutei Torah* explains. The distribution of meat should therefore have been carried out by the seventy elders. Despite this, it was the deed of Moshe Rabbeinu.

When one provides for one's needs in the domain of Chabad, the spiritual and material aspects complement one another. You tell me that your action in the Chabad institutions has been damaging to your health. You will doubtless be able to organize yourself so as not to come to this extreme. Thus, if it is necessary to travel, you must not do so all year long, nor even during the major part of it. Conversely, neither must you withdraw completely.

May Hashem grant that you provide for your needs and those of the members of your family with breadth of mind. You will redouble ardor, including in a quantitative manner, in the dissemination of the wellsprings (of Chassidus*) outward and in your personal study of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus*.

זה עתה נתקבל מכתבו מר"ח אייר בו כותב אשר לפ"ע הזמן והמצב הצליח בשליחותו במדינת... ולפלא שאין כותב יותר פרטים ובכל אופן בודאי יודע ושמע על הוראת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע לשד"רים צו קלייבען גשמיות און זייהען - לזרוע - רוחניות אשר מלשונו זה מובן שהא בהא תליא.

מה שכותב אשר יש רופאים מייעצים לנתח את השקדים של... שי' ומחכים לקריאה מהרופא לעשות הנתוח. הנה בטח קודם שיעשו ישאלו את דעתו עוד הפעם כיון שתלוי זה במצב האויר בעת ויום שאומרים שצריך להסיר השקדים נוסף על מה שכמה רופאים אין דעתם כ"כ בהחלט לנתח שקדים כמו שהי' בשנים שעברו, ואיך שיהי' יה"ר מהשי"ת שיהי' בשעה טובה ומוצלחת ויגדלוהו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים.

בהנוגע לעניני פרנסתו. הנה בכלל צריך להשתדל בכל תוקף שתהי' גם הפרנסה בגשמיות קשורה עם עבודה בכרם חב"ד, שמלבד שזה קרוב יותר ללבם של אנ"ש אם ביודעים או בלא יודעים ובמילא העבודה בהצלחה יותר, הנה גם מצד רוחנית הדבר מובן כי נשיאנו הק' הם המשפיעים לתלמידי' ולאנ"ש בכלל כל השפעות הנצרכים להם וע"ד מה שנאמר במשה רבנו מאין לי בשר וכו' שלא הי' זה במדריגתו כלל כמבואר בלקו"ת ובמילא הוכרחה השפעת הבשר להיות באמצעית השבעים זקנים, אבל בכ"ז רק ע"י משה רבנו.

וכשהפרנסה קשורה בכרם חב"ד הרי הצד הרוחני והגשמי מסייעים זל"ז. ומה שכותב שעסקנותו עד עתה בכרם חב"ד מזיקה לבריאות כו' הרי בטח יש לסדר באופן שלא ללכת בהקצוות, היינו אם לעשות נסיעות הרי אין זה מוכרח להיות כל השנה או רובה אבל לאידך גיסא שלא למשוך את ידו מזה לגמרי, והשי"ת ימציא לו פרנסתו ופרנסת ב"ב שיחיו בהרחבת הדעת ויוסיף אומץ גם בכמות בהפצת המעיינות חוצה ובלימוד הנגלה וחסידות גם לעצמו.
