To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem,

Rav Shmuel Menachem M. (Rav Shmuel Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, of Yerushalayim),

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of 25 Nissan, at the beginning of which you tell me that your son Reuven Shlomo has just begun the study of Chumash*.

May Hashem grant that, after having attained the study of the Written Law, he undertake at ten years that of the Mishnah*. You and your wife will derive much chassidishe* satisfaction from him, in material amplitude and with breadth of mind.

I took knowledge with pleasure of the activities carried out by the youth of the Tzeirei Agudas Chabad in Yerushalayim this past Purim. In the future, you will maintain this good practice, consisting in letting me know what is realized. The more details you give, the better it will be. I am surprised not to have had news of your own activities since Purim, in particular of your participation in the Tzeirei Agudas Chabad gathering (see letter no. 2596), which doubtless had the resonance that befits. I await your good news.

In reading the news that you give me, it seems that the youth of Tzeirei Agudas Chabad, when they visit a shul* or a settlement, do not have a program prepared in advance and prefer to improvise upon arriving on the spot. Certainly, it is impossible to fix everything in the smallest detail before reaching the place where the action is realized. Nevertheless, the program must be sufficiently detailed to avoid confusion and disorder.

In every place where one arrives, one must be particularly scrupulous, for one is perceived as the model of a young Chabad chassid*. If a defect is perceived, one may fear that it be imputed to all and not only to a certain person. You will understand what I mean. And you know the following teaching of Chazal* in Maseches Yoma 86a: "For example, if I take…" ("What is a chillul Hashem*? Rav says: For example, if I take meat from the butcher without paying him immediately" — a person who must serve as an example must be irreproachable).

בנועם קבלתי מכתבו מכ"ה ניסן ובתחלתו מודיע אשר בנו ראובן שלמה שי' התחיל ללמוד חומש, ויה"ר מהשי"ת אשר מלימוד המקרא יגדל לבן עשר למשנה וכו' והוא וזוגתו שיחיו ירוו ממנו רוב נחת חסידותי מתוך פרנסה טובה והרחבת הדעת.

נהניתי ממ"ש אודות העסקנות של צעירי אגו"ח בירוש"ת בפורים העבר ובודאי גם על להבא ינהג מנהג טוב זה להודיע ע"ד הנ"ל וכל המפרט בזה ה"ז משובח. ולפלא שעד עתה לא קבלתי ידיעות מפעולותיהם הטובות מפורים ועד עתה ובפרט ע"ד השתתפות בכינוס צעירי אגו"ח אשר בודאי היתה במדה המתאימה ואחכה לבשו"ט.

מקריאת ידיעותיו נשאר רושם אשר עבודת צעירי אגו"ח כשמבקרים בבתי כנסיות ומושבים אין להם תכנית מפורטת מראש וסומכין על המצב כשיבואו על אתר וכו' ואף שבודאי א"א לקבוע הפרטי פרטים קודם בואם על אתר אבל צריך שתהי' תכנית די מפורטת בכדי שלא יהי' בלבולים ואי סדר וכו' והרי צריך להזהר בכל מקום שבאים ביותר כיון שמביטים עליהם כעל דוגמא מהו צעיר חסיד חב"די וכשמוצאים איזה גרעון יש מקום לחשש שיתלו זה בהכלל ולא באיש פרטי זה וד"ל, וכבר ידוע מרז"ל כגון אנא דאי שקילנא וכו' (יומא פו, א).

בברכה שיזכה לבשר תמיד טוב בגו"ר הן בנוגע לעצמו והן בנוגע לחבריו בעבודתו בקדש.
