Igrot Kodesh · Letter 261 — Establishing a Fund for Printing Chassidic Works

By the grace of Hashem*, 10 Tevet* 5707, To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem*, student of the Yeshiva*, the Rav M.[1], I greet you and bless you,
You have not written to us for a very long time, although we have had news of you through your brother, Rav C.[2].
Considering our lack of means to print the writings and books of our teachers, I made a proposal to your brother and asked him to convey it to you. I am now formulating it again, in writing. Can you constitute, among the Chassidim* and the students of the Yeshiva*, a publication committee, which will create a fund for printing? It will collect donations from those who wish to have their name appear in the dedications, or to dedicate these books to the memory of someone, or simply to make a financial contribution. It will also undertake to distribute the publications, which will allow the recovery of a portion of the sum invested in printing.
I do not wish to elaborate beyond this, not knowing the situation in your city in this regard. You will decide the rest yourself, according to your own analysis. What matters to me is only that we not be prevented from disseminating the teachings of our teachers by lack of means, my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*, having given his consent for this printing.
I await learning your opinion in this matter and your positive response. You will tell me who should, in your view, belong to this committee. In any case, you yourself must be a member of it. Moreover, the residents of the Holy Land have not, for now, participated in the publication of the books of Chassidut*.
Please remit, as soon as possible, twenty pounds[3] to my brother[4]. You may draw them from our funds. I thank you in advance.
Regarding the debt of Torat Shalom*, your brother gave me nineteen shekels[5] and a half. For my package, I paid eighteen shekels[5], as you asked me. Furthermore, you may send us approximately twenty copies of the Tanya*.
I hope that the Torat Chaim*, the Imrei Binah*, and the Perush HaMilot* will be published within a month. You are surely aware that the Derech Mitzvotecha* and the Siddur* Torah Or*, with the Shaar HaKollel*, have appeared.

זה זמן רב אשר לא קבלנו ממנו מכ', אף שהגיענו פ"ש ע"י אחיו הר"ש שי'.

בחשבי ע"ד חוסר האמצעים להדפסת כתבי וספרי כ"ק רבותינו הצעתי לפני אחיו ע"מ שימסור לכם, והנני כופל הצעתי גם בכתב שתסדרו ועד להדפסה מבין אנ"ש והתמימים, ותפקידו יהי' לייסד קרן להדפסה (ע"י נדבות מאנשים שירצו שיזכר שמם על הספר, או לזכר נשמת כו' וכיו"ב. נדבות סתם וכו') ולהשתדל אח"כ בהפצת הנדפסים (שעי"ז יוחזר לקופתם חלק עכ"פ ממה שישקיעו בהדפסה).

איני רוצה לכתוב יותר פרטים בזה, מאי ידעי תנאי מקומם במקצוע זה, וזה עליהם להחליט כפי בינתם. ומה שנודע לי הוא זה שלא תהי' מניעה מפני חוסר אמצעים, להפצת תורת רבותינו, כיון שכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א נתן הרשיון לפרסמם, אחכה לחוות דעתו בכלל בזה וגם באופן חיובי, להצעתו את מי להכניס בועד זה (בכל אופן מוכרח שהוא יהי' בהועד) וזאת להעיר אשר ע"ע לא השתתפו יושבי אה"ק בהוצאת הדפסת תורת דא"ח כלל.

מטובו לתת לאחי שי' עשרים ליטראות בהקדם. ויכול לקחת מקופתנו ות"ח מראש.

ע"ח התורת שלום נתן אחיו לי י"ט וחצי שקל ובעד חבילתי שלמתי כפי הוראתו י"ח שקל. כן יכול לשלח לנו עשרים טופסים תניא.

אקוה אשר בעוד כחדש ימים תיגמר הדפסת התורת חיים, אמרי בינה ופירוש המלות. ובטח נודע לו אשר הו"ל את הדרך מצותיך והסדור תו"א עם שער הכולל.
