Greetings and blessing,
I have written many times to indicate how the network (the Oholei Yosef Yitzchak Lubavitch* school network in the Holy Land) is to work. Nevertheless, because of the importance all of this carries, I shall specify it once again. I am profoundly surprised by the manner in which several teachers, including chassidim*, regard the network. This is, in particular, your case.
You consider this as a work that you carry out on behalf of someone else, and to whom you can therefore present your demands. If these are not fully satisfied, you immediately conclude that you must seek another work. After all, what does it matter in what manner you assure your livelihood and that of the members of your family (by this work or by any other)?
Such a conception must be totally rejected. The owner of the network is my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us, and the schools bear his name. All those to whom Hashem has granted success, the enviable lot, the possibility of bringing their contribution to this school, must see in it the gateway and the channel through which they receive all the blessings, spiritual and material, as well as those of the members of their family.
Nevertheless, as for everything that exists in the world, a distribution of roles is necessary. Those who have a greater merit receive a preponderant mission, that of teaching. The others are only directors, or content themselves with bringing their financial support.
Having said this, it is clear that one may be astonished. A sensible man, who has known success in this activity, goes to the director and says to him: "Listen, I do you the favor of participating in your work here. In exchange, you must satisfy all my demands, and if you do not, I will leave immediately." It is surely useless to say more.
If the teachers who are chassidim* reason in this way, it is clear that those, men and women, who are not yet so for the present, will do the same — naturally, or under the incitement of others — whereas their work was that of the "faithful servant" defined by the chassidishe* discourses of 5666 (5666/1906, of the Rebbe Rashab*) — that is, the one who, when he contents himself with obeying, also strives to do so to his utmost, not only with regard to his obligation, but also for that which goes beyond it.
It is quite clear that one who possesses a great treasure will not go to others saying: "If you accede to my requests, I will use my treasure; and if not, I will throw it away and wander through the squares and the streets, in order to earn a few coins." You must understand what I mean.
You will therefore explain all of this not only to yourself, but also to the other male and female teachers, whom you know or whom you will come to know. I hope that these few lines, quantitatively few, will produce all their qualitative effect.
Obviously, I do not say that all your demands are unjustified, or that the members of the administration are right in everything they do. I am only explaining that the most important share, in the work of the network, is that of the male and female teachers, who, morally, receive far more than those who direct. Now, by a Yid*, the material is enveloped by the spiritual, as it is said: "If you accept My decrees… I will give your rains in their time." Consequently, the material blessing you obtain is greater than that of the members of the administration — whether you observe it immediately and evidently, whether it reveals itself only later, or whether it is in conformity with the principle: "He to whom a miracle befalls is not aware of it."
You know what the chassidishe* discourses of the Rebbe Maharash* explain — that nowadays, the manner of earning one's living is truly miraculous and comparable to the manna received in the wilderness. May Hashem therefore guard you from causing harm to yourselves by leaving an institution of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, whose merit will protect us.
As for the education of the pupils of the network, so that their conduct conform to the Shulchan Aruch* and be filled with yiras Shamayim*, it is, once again, impossible to fix precise rules. The situation is surely different from one school to another, in function of the environment in which these pupils have grown up and received their education.
But, in a general way, and to the extent that, by one's attitude, one does not commit chillul Hashem* (by imposing what is not accepted), one must adopt the rule "I will drive him out little by little" (a progressive approach to bring their conduct to evolve). Here too, the teachers must consult among themselves, and "the answer is obtained through the many counselors."
Doubtless your activity, within the network, will know the eagerness that befits it. May Hashem multiply your good pupils, who will do honor to the network, and that, justly, the male and female teachers may say: "See those whom we have raised."
With my blessing for success,
