Igrot Kodesh · Letter 260 — Care for the Rebbe's Mother

By the grace of Hashem*, Tuesday of Parshat Vayechi* 5707, To the distinguished Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav C. M. Kalmenson[1], I greet you and bless you,
I have received your letter from the Wednesday of Parshat Toledot*, and I thank you for having written to my mother[2], may she have long life. I am very surprised that you do not give me news of her — that you do not tell me whether she is in good health. Are the Chassidim who are present there helping her, to the full extent of their means, to meet her needs? It is clear that all of this will be at my expense[3]. You will surely give me this information, in detail, in your next letter.
In accordance with your request, we have sent you several of our publications, in your name, by separate shipment. Please confirm that you have received them. You will endeavor to make these books available to as many people as possible, either by placing them in a public location, a synagogue* or a reading room, or by lending them successively to many people. One who confers merit upon the community receives himself the equivalent of that merit[4].
I have heard that in the city where you are currently located, there are Chabad* books that were printed in Hungary or Czechoslovakia during the war, shortly before or shortly after it, perhaps at Rav Rapoport's. Please verify this and send here a copy of each book, for the attention of the Merkaz L'Inyanei Chinuch* or the Kehot* publishers. Of course, we will send you other books in exchange, according to what you request.
We have published here a new edition of the Siddur* Tehillat Hashem*, with corrections and additional notes, in accordance with the instructions of my father-in-law, the Rebbe* Shlita*. I believe your father dealt with this when he was in Petersburg*. We have sent several copies in your name, and please confirm receipt of this parcel as well as the previous one.
I await your letter bearing good news about my mother, may she have long life. You will first consult the Targum Yonatan* on the verse 'Naftali* is like a swift doe dispatched' and the commentary of the Tzeror HaMor*, according to which Naftali was a man of peace. It was therefore he whom his father and brothers charged with announcing peace.
Naftali is, furthermore, directly linked to swiftness and good tidings. The Tzemach Tzedek* explains, in the Or HaTorah*, that his name is of the same etymology as Tefila* — prayer — which connects the highest point to the lowest place. In moving swiftly, one knows only goodness and beneficence, as the Likkutei Torah* explains, at the end of Parshat Korach*, regarding Aharon's* almonds.

מכתבו מיום ד' תולדות נכון נתקבל ות"ח על שלחו מכתבי לאמי מורתי שליט"א, ולפלא גדול על אשר אינו מזכיר ע"ד שלומה ובריאותה, אם אנ"ש הנמצאים שמה עוזרים בידה כפי יכולתם בכל הנצרך לה (ופשיטא אשר עלי לסלק) וכו', ובודאי ימלא במכתבו הבא בפרטיות.

כפי בקשתו נשלח על שמו כמה מהוצאותינו בחבילה בפני עצמה, ומטובו לאשר הקבלה, ועליו לסדר אשר ישתמשו בהם רבים, אם עי"ז שיהיו מונחים במקום שרבים נמצאים שם (ביהכ"נ, חדר לקריאה וכיו"ב) או ע"י שאלה ע"מ להחזיר ולחזור ולהשאילם לאחר, וכל המזכה את הרבים זכות הרבים תלוי בו.

שמעתי אשר במחנו עתה, יש ספרי חב"ד, אשר הדפיסום באונגארון טשכי' וכו' במשך המלחמה וסמוך לה מלאחרי' (אצל הרב ראפאפארט?) ומטובו להודע ולשלוח לכאן עקז' אחד מכל ספר וספר ע"ש המל"ח או קהת. ומובן אשר נשלח ספרים אחרים תמורתם, כפי הוראתו.

הדפסנו פה במהדורא חדשה עם איזה תיקונים והוספות, ע"פ הוראות כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר שליט"א את הסידור תהלת ד' (כמדומה שנתעסק בו אביו בהיותו בפ"ב) וג"ז נשלח על שמו וכפי הנ"ל, ומטובו לאשר קבלת כל החבילות.

אחכה מכתבו מבשר טוב בנוגע לאמי מורתי שליט"א בהקדם יעוין בת"י עה"פ נפתלי אילה, ובמדרש הובא בס' צרור המור נפתלי אילה שלוחה על נפתלי נאמר שהי' איש שלום ולו עשו אביו ואחיו שליח לבשר שלום, וי"ל שייכות נפתלי, מהירות ובשורות טובות ע"פ המבואר באוה"ת להצ"צ שנפתלי הוא מל' תפלה וחבור מלמע' מעלה עד למטה מטה וכשהולך במהירות הוא אך טוב וחסד וכנודע בענין שקדים דאהרן (לקו"ת ס"פ קרח).
