To the very distinguished man, who fears Hashem, has good sentiments and a positive understanding, Rav Yisrael, who is called Doctor Efrat,
Greetings and blessing,
I was pleased to make your personal acquaintance on the occasion of the chassidishe* farbrengen* of Purim*. As my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, says, when two Yidden* meet, there must result a good for a third, beyond what each of the two derives from it.
I was told that you give lectures on literature and philosophy. You expound, in particular, the conceptions of Rabbi Shlomo ibn Gabirol, expressed in his sefer* Mekor Chaim. You doubtless know that there exist several points in common between Chabad* Chassidus* and the teaching of Rabbi Shlomo ibn Gabirol.
There is no doubt that one who has a good knowledge of Chabad* Chassidus* will better understand the ideas of Rabbi Shlomo ibn Gabirol in his Mekor Chaim. Obviously, one must not deduce from this a lack of originality of Chassidus* in general, and Chabad* Chassidus* in particular. For there exist points in common between different parts of our holy Torah.
Several attempts have been made to formulate an "internationalist" interpretation of the writings of Rabbi Shlomo ibn Gabirol — one that would not find its source in the Torah of Israel. This conception is false. Not only is his teaching based on the Tradition of Israel and the ancient Kabbalah*, but, moreover, the Torah and the Kabbalah* are an integral part of his conceptions.
On the occasion of the festival of Matzos*, the time of our liberty, I send you my blessing for a kosher and joyous festival, a true freedom, the deliverance from material and spiritual troubles, from everything that obstructs an avodas Hashem* that is joyous and enthusiastic.
In your days and in ours shall be fulfilled the terms of the long-awaited promise: "As in the days of your going out from Mitzrayim*, I shall show you wonders" — at the time of the true and complete redemption, by our righteous Moshiach*.
With my respects and my blessing for the festival,
