To the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, of generous conduct, descended from an illustrious family, Rav Schneur Zalman Shazar,
Greetings and blessing,
On the occasion of the festival of Pesach* that is approaching, in a positive manner, for us and for all of Israel, I would like, by the present letter, to send you my blessing that it be kosher and joyous.
I shall now address what is timely. One of the salient facts of the time of our liberty is the constitution of Israel as a people, despite the unsuited conditions of the time. One then had to have a particularly intense emunah*.
Bnei Yisrael* lived by their emunah*, and very rapidly their hope was realized. Now, it is this emunah* that we celebrate during the festival of Matzos*. An entire people — made of men, women, and children — was transformed. They left a country that ensured the subsistence of the world, possessed an industry and a developed way of life relative to the conditions of the time. Then, they went, in the words of the verse, "into a great and dreadful wilderness, full of serpents and scorpions."
And our prophet says: "I remember for you the chesed* of your youth, when you followed Me into the wilderness, in a parched and uncultivated place."
In every era, a person is required to consider that he himself came out of Mitzrayim*, by his unshakable emunah* in "Anochi Hashem Elokecha* asher hotzeisicha me'eretz Mitzrayim*" — "I am Hashem, Who brought you out of the land of Mitzrayim*." He can thus liberate himself from all obstacles and all barriers, inner and outer.
We have the minhag* of sending matzah shemurah* to friends and relatives. I therefore enclose three with the present letter, since you reside in Eretz Yisrael* and therefore do not have the obligation to observe the second day of the festival — and thus the second Seder*, for which one would need three other matzos*.
In the words of the Zohar*, these matzos* are "the food of refuah*" and "the food of emunah*."
With my respects and my blessing, on the occasion of the festival,
