Greetings and blessing,

I duly received your letter of 27 Adar Sheni, in which you announce to me that you have left the yeshivah*, even though I had answered you that you should remain there, and even though you were one of its good talmidim*. You now realize that it was a folly. You tell me that you no longer have a beard and that your peyos* are shortened. You request my counsel and my blessing.

In light of all this, I do not understand what you are asking of me, since you did all this in accordance with your own decisions. It is concerning such situations that Chazal* say: "He who says I have not labored and have nevertheless succeeded, do not believe him." Everything therefore depends on you. If you truly desire to be Chabad*, as you write, know that nothing stands in the way of will.

In order to attain this, one must study the Torah with mesirus nefesh*, without too many prior calculations, without setting a goal at every step one undertakes — all the more so when it concerns a step that the yetzer hara* itself recognizes as such. One must also fulfill the mitzvos* in the best possible manner, and first of all put into practice what the beginning of the Shulchan Aruch* and the Tur Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim say — namely, not to be ashamed before those who mock. It is in this way that one receives the possibilities of putting the Torah and the mitzvos* into practice.

One must therefore, above all, submit oneself to Hashem, give of oneself, at least potentially. You will consult the Tanya*, end of chapter 25 and chapter 41. This text cites the words of the Zohar* on parshas Behar. As we have seen, Chazal* assure us that it suffices to make an effort in order to experience success.

I read with satisfaction that you study Chassidus* several times a week. Doubtless you endeavor to put it into practice in your activities, your thoughts, your speech, and your actions, daily. May Hashem grant you success.

With my blessing for a kosher and freilichen* Pesach*,

For the Rebbe shlita*,
