To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, Rav Avraham Bardaki,

Greetings and blessing,

I duly received your letter of 26 Adar Sheni, and I hasten to respond, for I read in it, with dismay, that someone reports a halachic ruling, concretely applicable, in my name, concerning tefillah* — according to which it would be useless if it were not pronounced with a certain intent. Moreover, it is added that the same is true also for birkas hamazon*.

I am surprised by such a situation. Why should certain people decide halachah* citing my name? Why not rather question me directly? And you know the ruling of Chazal*, stated in maseches Bava Basra 130b, that no practical conclusion can be drawn until one says what results from it for concrete action.

It is true that I underscored the importance of fervor in tefillah* to several people (see also letter no. 2251), including those who are not Chassidim. One finds this same idea in the chiddushim* of Rav Chaim of Brisk on the Rambam's hilchos tefillah*: "if one forgets that one is standing before Hashem, one is considered as though one had not said these words."

Nevertheless, I wonder whether, for Rav Chaim of Brisk, this is a halachah* concretely applicable. His sefer* is a collection of chiddushim* and not of halachic rulings. The Shulchan Aruch* and the later poskim* do not state this halachah*. Nor does it figure in the Shulchan Aruch* of the Alter Rebbe*, and it cannot therefore be considered as concretely applicable. You will consult, on this subject, the beginning of chapter 38 of the Tanya*.

You also ask me about the text of the brachah* Shehecheyanu*, in which the word "lizman" appears (and not "lazman"), according to the Haggadah* published by Kehot*. This is indeed an instruction that we received from our leader, the Frierdiker Rebbe, and it seems to me that it emanates from the Alter Rebbe*, author of the Tanya* and of the Shulchan Aruch*.

With my blessing for a kosher and freilichen* Pesach*,
