Greetings and blessing,

You raise the matter of the first haircut of your son, whose birthday will fall on the seventh day of Pesach*. According to the writings of the later Sages (see also letter no. 2539), one can find a heter* to set this haircut during the Omer* period, since one may even do so during Chol HaMoed*. You will consult, on this subject, the Sha'arei Teshuvah on Shulchan Aruch* OC 531.

Nevertheless, I have not seen such a practice actually adopted. And you know in particular the minhag* of setting this haircut on Lag BaOmer*. In my opinion, you will therefore choose this date and, if possible, you will do it at Meron — where Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai*, whose hilula* falls then, is buried. You and your wife will educate this child to Torah, to chuppah*, and to ma'asim tovim*.

You also raise the question of communal activities. I am of your opinion when you write that it is painful to perceive the lack of action being taken in this matter. The pain is even greater if one observes this inaction in the perspective of the immense opportunities that are presenting themselves of late.

One can effectively verify that the slightest action experiences considerable success. Yet for negligible motives, one does not seize the occasion. I do not wish to evoke in greater detail the opposite of the brachah* that results from this, nor the reward of the mitzvah — that is, the mitzvah itself, which is a means of binding oneself to Hashem. Nevertheless, above one is offered an opportunity, and here below one does not seize it, acting thus contrary to all logic.

For all that, the explanations and the comments that figure in your letter are not addressed to me, but rather to the author of this letter and to his friends. Commenting on the Mishnah "Da mah lema'lah mimcha," one says that "all that depends on you," whether it concerns heavenly or earthly matters. There is surely no need to say more.

During these propitious days of the month of Nissan — that of the redemption from Mitzrayim* and from the limits each one undergoes — Hashem will grant that one truly be liberated from them, at least from what belongs to the domain of evil. In this way, one will also liberate oneself from the limits inherent in the realm of kedushah*.

As you ask of me, I shall mention the name of your daughter and of your wife when I find myself at the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us.

May Hashem grant that the pregnancy of your wife pass well and easily, and that she give birth in its time and without difficulty.

במ"ש אודות התספורת של בנו הנ"ל, שיום הולדתו חל בשביעי של פסח, הנה אף שע"פ מ"ש באחרונים יש למצוא היתר לעשות התספורת בימי הספירה, במכש"כ מחוה"מ (עיין שערי תשובה סי' תקל"א) בכל זה כיון שלא ראיתי נוהגין כן, ובפרט הידוע במנהג ישראל לעשות תספורת בל"ג בעומר הנה, לדעתי, יעשה זה ביום הנ"ל ואם אפשר במירון. והוא וזוגתו יחיו יגדלוהו לתורה ולחופה ולמעשים טובים.

במ"ש אודות עסקנות צבורית... הנה מסכים הנני למה שכותב שהלב כואב לראות את העדר הפעולות כדבעי בכלל וגדול הכאב עוד יותר כשמעריכים את העדר הנ"ל לגבי האפשרות הכי גדולות שנראים בזמן האחרון ורואים שבכל פעולה קטנה נראית הצלחה מופלגה ובכ"ז הנה מפאת ענינים של מה בכך אין מנצלים את ההזדמנות, ואין רצוני להאריך כלל בהיפך השכר הקשור בזה ולא להענין דשכר מצוה מצוה ל' צוותא וחיבור וכאשר מלמעלה שלאגט מען זיך אן ולמטה אין לוקחים הניתן להם אפילו בדרך הלעטה מבלי כל סיבה שכלית, אבל כל אותן הטעמים והנמוקים שכותב במכתבו לא אלי הי' צריך לכותבם אלא להכותב לעצמו ואח"כ גם לחבריו... וכידוע פסק המשנה דע [מה] למעלה ממך, אשר ממך ובך הדבר תלוי בכל הענינים דלמעלה ועאכו"כ בכל הענינים דלמטה והאריכות בזה אך למותר.

ובימי הסגולה הימים דחדש ניסן חדש הגאולה מהמצרים והגבלות הנה יה"ר שגם כל אחד... יצא לחירות ממצרים וגבולים עכ"פ מאלה ששרשם בהצד דלעו"ז שאז יצא ג"כ סו"ס מהמצרים והגבלות דקדושה.

כבקשתו אזכיר את בתו וזוגתו שיחיו בהיותי על הציון הק' של כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקללה"ה נבג"מ זי"ע.

והשי"ת ימלא ימי הריון זוגתו תחי' כשורה ובנקל ותלד זחו"ק בעתה ובזמנה כשורה ובקל.
