Greetings and blessing,

I am surprised to have had no news from you for a very long time, even though I obtain news through other persons and through your relatives.

I would like, in the present letter, to evoke what is timely — the festival of Pesach* that is approaching, and which involves, above all, eating matzah* on the first night. This festival is based on the fact of "vehigadta levincha*" — "and you shall tell your son" — which, as the text of the Haggadah* shows and as the halachah* specifies, also includes the wise child. And the Torah also alludes to a grown-up child. The various replies made to the children, all of which are defined by the Torah, establish that the message must be adapted to the child.

Hashem has granted you the merit of having an only son, who experiences a profound love for his fellow, to the point of not counting [the cost], of not being limited by logic. He gave proof of it by protecting and saving Yidden* in Eretz Yisrael* — which will be rebuilt and restored by our righteous Moshiach*, very soon and in our days.

Such an attitude is, assuredly, hereditary. It emanates from the chayus* of Chassidim, sons of Chassidim. It gives absolute proof that, by helping him, by approaching the question in the proper manner, one could have made of him someone who loves Hashem and who uses these strengths not only for the benefit of his fellow, but also for the Torah and for Hashem — which, according to the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov*, that "ahavas Yisrael*, ahavas haTorah*, and ahavas Hashem* are one and the same," is but one and the same sentiment.

If, for any reason, your son is not drawn to commercial activity, you must, with all your strength and by every means, give him the possibility of earning his livelihood in another manner — as an employee, in agriculture, or in the management of a factory. It only matters that he not find himself in an environment that would permanently subject him to nisayon*, in everything that concerns the Torah of light and the candle that is the mitzvah*. For everything depends, to a great extent, on the friends one has.

You yourself find yourself in Eretz Yisrael* for many years. I am therefore particularly surprised that you have not invested all the necessary energy in this domain — that you have not built up a business into which you could also have brought your son. At the beginning, everyone needs the help of a relative or a friend. How much more so must a son be able to count on his parents. In this way, your son will experience success, materially and spiritually at once. And this would also have been a success for his parents.

Obviously, I am not seeking to give you mussar*, and I am quite aware that it is useless to complain about what has passed. I am alluding only to the present and to the immediate future. You must henceforth concern yourself with your son, with particular and permanent attention, in the manner just defined. And we have been given the assurance that efforts are crowned with success.

It is doubtless unnecessary to specify to you that the conduct of an only son influences that of an only daughter. When one obtains a result with the first, one begins positively to devote oneself to the second, and perhaps there is here more than a beginning.

As you know, the festival of Pesach* marks the bitachon* of Bnei Yisrael* in the Holy One, blessed be He, as it is said: "I remember for you the chesed* of your youth, when you followed Me into the wilderness." In these days, at that time, Bnei Yisrael* gave proof of their total bitachon* in Hashem, and they observed with their own eyes the manna, the well of Miriam*, and the fact that "your garment did not wear out upon you."

Each year, in this period, all this reveals itself anew, and this profound bitachon* highlights collective and individual deliverance, the satisfaction of all needs, material and spiritual. As the Alter Rebbe* explains in the Likkutei Torah* on parshas Berachah, page 98b, all this can reveal itself in your home and in your surroundings also during the rest of the year.

This passage of Likkutei Torah* speaks of the bittul* that is common to all the festivals and which it suffices therefore to reveal until the next festival. But certain points are also specific to each. Those are revealed for the entire year. This is in particular the case for the festival of Pesach*. For, in accordance with the saying of my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, which figures in his sichah* of Pesach* 5703 (1943), a reflection of all the festivals exists each day, and that of Pesach* is permanent.

One can explain, at least briefly, that Shavuos* is "the time of the giving of our Torah." Sukkos* represents mitzvos*, which surround the person and which are, in a general way, represented by tzedakah*, according to ch. 5 of the Tanya*, as it is said: "I have placed My words in your mouth and I have covered you with the shadow of My hand." Finally, Pesach*, "the time of our liberty," introduces emunah* and, in the expression of the Zohar*, "the bread of emunah*."

Certain aspects of Torah and mitzvos* are subject to time and space. This is not the case for emunah*, which is a perpetual mitzvah, the foundation of Torah and mitzvos*. This is self-evident.

With my blessing for a kosher and freilichen* Pesach*,
