Brooklyn.

To the Rav, the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Michoel Lipsker of Meknes,

Greetings and blessing,

I duly received your letter of 27 Adar Sheni, with what it contained. I also received your letter of 29 Adar Rishon and what accompanied it.

I shall first address what is timely. Many talmidim* return home for Pesach*. It is important to equip them morally for this. This is necessary for themselves, so that they not remain idle, but above all so that they may be the channels assuring the dissemination, in the places to which they go, of Yiddishe* values in general, and of those of Chassidus*, its practices and its ways, in particular.

Apart from the good that will result for the community, such a practice also enables the talmidim* to acquire these values more deeply themselves. Several texts of Chassidus* explain that, in order to give to others, one must oneself possess profound knowledge.

I have written in the same sense also to Rav Shlomo Matusof of Casablanca (letter no. 2541).

What you write, in the sheet enclosed with your letter, to specify the various stages of ahavas Hashem* defined by the Tanya*, is particularly complicated.

You first ask the following question: are there several forms of love in the heart of man? I do not understand what your difficulty is. One can verify concretely that this is indeed the case. There exist several manifestations of love that all have one point in common — that of seeking nearness to Hashem.

Likewise, you say that the soul possesses ten kochos*, and you ask whether the attributes of the intellect, at the source of those of the middos*, also belong to the soul. Not only is the intellect part of the soul, but the same is true also for what flows from the intellect. For all that, it is clear that these attributes also possess an independent existence, even though an effect belongs to its cause.

Certain texts specify the differences that exist between intellect and middos*, but, above all, each koach* possesses a specific existence within the soul itself. And there are, in total, ten kochos*.

The various stages and various forms of love are defined in the letter of my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, which is printed at the end of Kuntres HaAvodah*, published by Kehot* in Brooklyn. References are also indicated in my notes on chapter 2 of Kuntres Etz Chaim*. By consulting these texts, you will cause most of your questions to disappear. You will also consult the commentary on the Tanya*, whose author is presumably Rav Shmuel Gronem (first mashpia* of the yeshivah* founded in Lubavitch by the Rebbe Rashab*), edited, by reproduction of the original, some years ago, by Rav Avraham Pariz of Eretz Yisrael*.

Concerning the love that flows from rachamim*, you will consult Likkutei Torah* on Shir HaShirim, at the beginning of the maamar* entitled "Mah yafis," and, in a more detailed manner, the Bonei Yerushalayim, ch. 108.

Obviously, the corrections that have been introduced in the Tanya* edited in Brooklyn can be discussed, and one is entitled to question them.

You ask a question on the note of page 55a, in which I questioned the word "vechu'" ("etc.") that appears in the text. You say that its purpose is to exclude the love that remains hidden in the heart and cannot therefore bring elevation. But if so, the "vechu'" is in opposition to what was said previously, since the context speaks of the love and the fear that effectively realize the elevation.

It seems therefore that the word "vechu'" introduces the possibility of an elevation toward the world of Atzilus*, as page 53a shows. This simply explains: A) why no mention at all is made of this elevation; B) why this idea is introduced in an allusive manner by the word "vechu'" and not clearly expressed.

According to what has just been said, one can advance, as page 53a specifies, that these are indeed hidden concepts, to which one has no access.

With my blessing for a kosher and freilichen* festival of Matzos*, awaiting your reply on all these points and also on my preceding letter, which you have surely received some time ago,
