4 Nissan 5714,
Brooklyn.

Greetings and blessing,

I am responding to your telegram of 3 Nissan, and I am surprised that on every occasion you systematically send a telegram rather than a letter, which could be more detailed. Moreover, the Torah has compassion for the money of Yidden*. Indeed, one has the right to squander one's own money. This does not mean that it is desirable to do so, as Chazal* underscore in maseches Bava Kamma 91b. And the same applies to the damage one causes to one's own money — which can, in this case, be likened to wastefulness.

In any event, you raise the possibility of fixing the wedding for Thursday evening, the eve of Lag BaOmer*.

As much as possible, it would be preferable that it take place on the day after Shavuos* and during the days that follow, until the end of the first half of Sivan. If, for some reason, you insist that it be on Lag BaOmer*, it will take place on Friday and not on Thursday evening, due to the various opinions that have been expressed on this matter, as the later sages say.

You tell me that the kallah* has no Hebrew name and that she is called Olga. You ask whether one should add a name to her. In general, several texts explain that the letters composing the name are the channels conveying the vitality that links the soul to the body. The Arizal*, and more generally the Sages of Kabbalah*, say that Hashem proclaims, for a soul in the upper world, the name that is chosen for it by the parents.

In this connection, you will see, among others, Sha'ar HaGilgulim, introduction 23; the Or HaChaim on the verse Devarim 29:17; and the Chofetz Hashem on maseches Berachos, paragraph 13.

There is therefore no reason to change her name or to add a name without valid reason. In this case, the name Elka or Elke is cited by collections of feminine names. Therefore one should change nothing.

Doubtless you redouble your ardor in the field of chinuch*. You will tell me what is being done in this regard. You will also tell me what your studies of the revealed part of the Torah and of Chassidus* are.

Awaiting your good tidings, and with my blessing for a kosher and freilichen* Pesach*,
