B"H

3 Nissan 5714,
Brooklyn.

To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem, devotes himself to communal needs, and multiplies positive actions, Rav Yehuda Zev HaLevi Segal,

Greetings and blessing,

I was pleased to learn that the studies of the winter at the yeshivah* were fruitful. You specify that this is so both for study and for yiras Hashem*. You doubtless allude to concrete action in daily life. For what has an effective application is much more deeply implanted in the mind, all the more so since these good behaviors can become habitual among the talmidim* and thus transform themselves into a second nature.

And it can be so even when yiras Hashem* is still only a hidden sentiment. For in the end, it is indeed action that is essential.

On the occasion of the festival of Matzos* that is approaching, I wish you, as well as the members of your family, that you may celebrate it in a kosher and joyous manner. Various texts explain that the festivals exert their influence on the days that follow them, until the next festival. The Likkutei Torah* of the Alter Rebbe* explains this also in parshas Berachah, page 98b. You will therefore feel it in your home and in your surroundings, throughout the year.

The Likkutei Torah*, at this reference, evokes the bittul* that is found in all the festivals and which one must therefore reveal only until the next festival. But a festival also has a specific content, which is preserved throughout the year.

This is in particular the case for Pesach*, in accordance with the saying of my father-in-law the Rebbe, pronounced at Pesach* 5703, according to which a reflection of the festivals illuminates each day. That of Pesach* continues permanently.

One can explain, at least briefly, that Shavuos* is "the time of the giving of our Torah." Sukkos* represents mitzvos*, which surround the person and which are, in a general way, represented by tzedakah*, according to ch. 5 of the Tanya*, as it is said: "I have placed My words in your mouth and I have covered you with the shadow of My hand." Finally, Pesach*, "the time of our liberty," introduces emunah* and, in the expression of the Zohar*, "the bread of emunah*."

Certain aspects of Torah and mitzvos* are subject to time and space. This is not the case for emunah*, which is a perpetual mitzvah, the foundation of Torah and mitzvos*. This is self-evident.

With my blessing for a kosher and freilichen* Pesach*,
