Igrot Kodesh · Letter 256 — Bitachon and Hishtadlut
Volume 2 · Letter 90
By the grace of Hashem*, 2 Kislev* 5707, Brooklyn, N.Y., To the young man who fears Hashem, yeshiva* student, Rav Y.[1], I greet you and bless you,
I respond to your questions:
A) You ask me whether bitachon* in Hashem does not exclude doing all that is naturally necessary, or whether it suffices to pray and entrust oneself to Hashem. You have heard it said that the Tzaddikim* have no need to resort to natural means, and you therefore wonder why Avraham* had to say[2]: 'Please say that you are my sister'[3].
Here is my response. In general, one must both place one's trust in Hashem and do all that is naturally necessary — this is quite evident. The Written Torah* and the Midrashim* of our Sages provide ample proof of this. And resorting to natural means does not in any way contradict bitachon in Hashem, since the Almighty Himself, in Whom each person must place his trust, affirms that He grants His blessing to the extent that a person introduces his own action, and not if he remains apathetic, as stated in Sifri* Devarim 15, 18.
Two conclusions follow from what has just been said:
1. One must resort to natural means solely because Hashem requires it. If, on the other hand, one considers that such intervention is, in itself, beneficial or harmful, one calls into question one's bitachon in Hashem.
2. A person can only be commanded to do what is within his power, for Hashem does not act with malice toward His creatures. If he cannot take the natural path, this is proof that Hashem does not require it of him. And this in no way weakens the certainty that Hashem will grant his request.
However, one may still pose two questions:
1. Why are we commanded to take the natural path since this recourse, it seems, changes nothing?
2. And what happens if one does not take these natural paths?
Chassidut* answers the first question. For a reason that surpasses us, divine influence enters this physical world only by being introduced into a material vessel. Consequently, the higher part of the human personality, which is in the image of the Most High, must use the same vessel — that is, act concretely to earn one's livelihood (...).
For the second question, regarding one who does not take the natural paths when he could do so, our Sages say that since he counted on a miracle, he will not be entitled to one. Therefore, not only will his bitachon in Hashem be without effect, but furthermore, he will be punished for having put himself in danger. And if the miracle nonetheless occurs, it will be deducted from his merits and will even be a cause of concern for the Creator.
The Tzaddikim, including those who possess a soul stemming from the spiritual world of Atzilut*, which even when found in a physical body remains an integral part of that world, but who may nonetheless be troubled by the concerns of the material world and are subject to the veil that characterizes it — these Tzaddikim must also take the natural paths, for the reason previously stated.
In contrast, the Tzaddikim who in no way suffer the travails of the world, who remain perfectly attached to Hashem exactly as when their soul was above, who are not subject to the contingencies of the world — they have no need to take the natural paths.
Torat Chaim* explains that the Patriarchs belong to the first category. This is why they were shepherds, separated from the concerns of the world. Avraham uttered the phrase cited above, and Yaakov* devised various stratagems to escape Esav*.
Yosef*, by contrast, belonged to the second category. He therefore had no need to take the natural paths, and was even punished when he did so[4].
However, one may question what has just been said. For Torat Chaim asks why Yosef was punished for having resorted to a stratagem to try to be freed. Did Yaakov not do the same without receiving any punishment? Torat Chaim therefore explains that Yosef transcended the chain of worlds, but does not give the explanation reproduced in this letter.
Nevertheless, this question does not arise at all, for Torat Chaim also explains why Yosef did not fear that the sin[5] would be held responsible[6] for his not being freed, as Yaakov did. It thus introduces a new explanation, adding to the one developed in the preceding chapters, saying that Yosef did not suffer the travails of the world. It further specifies that Yosef transcended all opposing forces.
A chassidic discourse* delivered in 5654[7] states: 'One of our great Sages said that one who is undergoing a trial must place his trust in Hashem, must not pray to be delivered from it, must do nothing special, must not immerse in the ritual bath for that purpose, but must only entrust himself to Hashem. This is comparable to silence, which is a mark of profound submission.' All this is most surprising.
Another remark: one can earn one's livelihood to obtain 'the bread of the earth'[8]. But one can also receive bread from heaven[9]. However, this distinction concerns our subject only indirectly (...).

B) Commenting on the verse 'say, please, that you are my sister,' the Midrash deduces from it that one may perform shechita* on a Shabbat* to give meat to an ill patient. The sacred books explain that Avraham resorted to a stratagem and did not merely place his trust in Hashem. They conclude that one must not rely on a miracle that might befall the patient. You ask me what the explanation of all this is.
You do not indicate the reference of this Midrash or of the sacred books that comment upon it, whose words confer wisdom[10]. Indeed, this assertion is difficult to justify. Why does the Midrash not deduce simply from this verse that one does not rely on a miracle?
The Zohar*, vol. 1, page 82a, affirms that, on the contrary, Avraham did rely on a miracle, and this is why he went to Egypt. And the Zohar, vol. 3, page 52a, specifies that he saw an angel walking before Sarah, but not before himself. He then said: 'Would she be protected while I would not?' It is therefore for this reason that he asked her: 'Say, please, that you are my sister'[11].
One may therefore understand this Midrash as follows. Avraham asked Sarah to pass herself off as his sister in order to save his own life, and one may conclude from this that it is permitted to transgress a prohibition in order to save one's neighbor.
But this explanation itself is not fully satisfying. For why not simply say that one may desecrate Shabbat for the needs of a sick person? Why speak specifically of shechita?
To answer all this, one knows the question that arises when one seeks to deepen one's understanding[12]. Why did Avraham imagine that the Egyptians would kill him and commit a crime solely in order to avoid having relations with a married woman? For that is precisely why he asked her to pass herself off as his sister.
One of the answers is as follows. By killing him, they would have sinned only once, whereas by taking Sarah while Avraham was alive, they would have transgressed at each relation they had with her. The Midrash therefore deduces that one may perform shechita for a sick person on Shabbat, and that one does not present him with non-kosher (tref*) meat, for the same reason. This sick person would commit a transgression each time he consumes an olive's-measure of that meat, whereas shechita is, in total, only a single prohibition[13].
However, one may still wonder how the Midrash deduces that one may perform shechita for a sick person on Shabbat, given that such an act, committed once, carries a death penalty. Whereas consuming non-kosher meat is only the repeated transgression, many times over, of a prohibition[14]. In the account of Avraham, on the other hand, from which this deduction is made, both the murder and the relation with a married woman carry a death penalty.
The proof drawn by the Midrash is, in fact, as follows. How can one establish that they would have killed Avraham and committed a capital crime — that is, incurred a death sentence once — in order to avoid that which would have resulted from a relation with her? The Egyptians could have had a relation with her that was deviant, providing pleasure but not incurring a death sentence. Nevertheless, such a practice is also condemnable, and the other nations, who accepted the principles of morality after the Flood, also condemn it. It is therefore evident that they would have killed him, preferring a grave sin committed once to less grave sins committed repeatedly. This is why Avraham asked Sarah to pass herself off as his sister, and one may indeed deduce from this that shechita is performed on Shabbat in order to give meat to a sick person.
One may also offer another explanation. If the Egyptians had taken Sarah by force, without Avraham being able to prevent them, he would have been considered as having relinquished Sarah, as is the case when there are robbers[15], according to the tractate Bava Kama* 114a. Therefore, she could have been considered as divorced. Indeed, the descendants of Noach* were not required to draw up a written bill of divorce — separation sufficed for them. She would therefore no longer have been considered a married woman. Nevertheless, such a practice is, once again, condemnable.
With my blessing of immediate teshuva*, immediate redemption, Rav Menachem Schneerson, Director of the Executive Committee
I have just noticed that Torah Shleima*, Parshat Lech Lecha*, paragraph 145, cites this Midrash with reference to Midrash Plya, and develops the explanation given above. Nevertheless, it does not raise the objection concerning Avraham, arising from the fact that both transgressions[16] carry the same punishment[17], which is not the case for consuming non-kosher meat and shechita[18].

* * *
