Igrot Kodesh · Letter 255 — Torah Study and Outreach in Eretz Yisrael

To the Chassid* who fears Hashem, Rav Avraham [1],

I greet and bless you,

I am replying to your letter of 28 Elul 5706. I was pleased to learn that you arrived safely in our Holy Land, may it be restored and rebuilt. I was glad to see that you have chosen to be near Chassidim*, among whom you will be able to fulfill your wish to study Torah* and to know the way of Hashem.

Being there, you will likewise endeavor to exert a positive influence upon your surroundings, to draw them closer to the Torah* and the Mitzvot*, to strengthen them in their observance.

In Midrash* Bereishit Rabbah*, our Sages teach that the Holy Land was called Eretz* [2] because it wished to fulfill the will of its Creator, and Yisrael* because 'you have wrestled [3] against angels and men and you have prevailed.'

To dwell in Eretz Yisrael* therefore means to put into practice the Will of the Creator, even if, in order to do so, one must struggle against men and against the natural forces that the stars and the angels are charged with directing.

This is why HaTeva*, nature, has the same numerical value as the divine Name Elokim* [4], as the Shnei Luchot HaBrit* notes, in the third commentary on tractate Pesachim*.

Indeed, the atmosphere of Eretz Yisrael* grants wisdom and protects from the spirit of folly that takes hold of a person when he commits a transgression.

We will be glad to hear your good news, in particular regarding your actions to strengthen Torah* and Judaism.

שלום וברכה!

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ח אלול ה'תש"ו, שמחתי לשמוע כי בא בשלום לארצנו הקדושה תותב"א והתענגתי כי מצא את סביבת אנ"ש שי' אשר יוכל לרוות שם את צמאונו ללמוד התורה ולדעת את דרך ה'.

ובטח גם שם ישתדל להשפיע ג"כ על אחרים לקרבם לתומ"צ ולחזקם בקיומם.

ידוע מארז"ל (ב"ר ספ"ה) למה נקרא שמה ארץ שרצתה לעשות רצון קונה, וישראל על שם כי שרית עם אלקים ואנשים ותוכל, וא"כ דירה בארץ ישראל, היינו שעושה רצון קונו אף שעי"ז צריך ללחום נגד אנשים וגם נגד כחות הטבע (שהמזלות ומלאכים הם שלוחים להנהיגו, ולכן הטבע בגימט' אלקים כמ"ש בשל"ה מס' פסחים דרוש ג') כי אוירא דארץ ישראל מחכים ומסייע שלא יכנס רוח שטות (שאין אדם עובר עבירה אלא א"כ נכנס בו רוח שטות).

נשמח לשמוע מהנעשה אתו לטוב ומפעולותיו בחזוק התורה והיהדות.
