23 Adar Sheni 5714,
Brooklyn.

Greetings and blessing,

I am responding to your letter of 3 Adar Sheni, in which you tell me that you are very worried about your wife and the members of your family. You are also worried about the means of providing for your livelihood. All this prevents you from having the menuchas hadaas* necessary to study the Torah of Hashem.

I am surprised that you do not mention the channels and the kelim* that allow one to obtain divine brachos* in these areas — that is, Torah and mitzvos*. You know the letter addressed by the Alter Rebbe* — author of the Tanya* and posek of the inner part of the Torah, author of the Shulchan Aruch* and posek of the revealed part of the Torah — to someone who was formulating practically the same complaint as you (about material problems):

"You concern yourself with what you need, but not with what is expected of you."

This story is mentioned in a letter of my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, which is printed in fascicle no. 57 (see Igros Kodesh of the Frierdiker Rebbe vol. 3 letter 729 and vol. 9 letter 3054).

It is also explained that by applying one's efforts to that which is the purpose of man on earth — in accordance with the statement of Chazal* at the end of maseches Kiddushin: "ani lo nivreisi ela leshamesh es koni" — "I was not created except to serve my Creator" — one obtains from Hashem the satisfaction of one's own needs.

You are surely familiar with the three studies which concern everyone and which were instituted by my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us. These are the following:

A) Tehillim*, according to its monthly division, recited each day after shacharis*.

B) A parshah* of the Chumash* with Rashi*'s commentary — Sunday from the beginning of the sidra* until Sheini, Monday from Sheini to Shlishi, and so on.

C) A passage of Tanya*, which one studies each day, according to the annual division of this sefer*.

At the next opportunity, you will kindly inform me about all this. As you ask, I shall mention each of you at the holy tziyun* of my father-in-law the Rebbe, so that you obtain the satisfaction of all your needs, material and spiritual.

With my blessing that you announce to me good tidings concerning all that has just been said, and that you have a kosher and freilichen* Pesach*,

For the Rebbe shlita*,
