To the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Yisrael Moshe Lipchitz,

Greetings and blessing,

I duly received your letter of 3 Adar Sheni and, for a certain reason, my response has been delayed until now. In fact, you introduce, at the end of your letter, an allusion to my response, which is the following.

In the family of the Rebbe, it is not customary to give a haskamah* to a sefer* or a pamphlet. And Chazal* say: "al titosh toras imecha" — "do not abandon the practice of your forebears." In this case, you are reproducing a sefer*, and you do not indicate, in your letter, the name of its author. Nevertheless, you enclose documents with your letter, and it appears that this is the commentary on the Torah of the author of the Choreiv (Rav Shimshon Raphael Hirsch).

Now, these seforim* are well known and famous in the circles to which your copies are presumably destined.

May Hashem grant that each of us assume his role and his shlichus*, to illuminate and transform the darkness of the world, illuminating it through "ki ner mitzvah veTorah ohr*" — "for the candle is a mitzvah* and the Torah is light" — through the luminary of the Torah, which is its inner dimension.

I hope it is unnecessary to remind you that in our era, it is an absolute necessity to have a fixed time for the study of the inner part of the Torah. This is incumbent also upon descendants of milieus which, in other times, were distant from such study. According to a well-known image, when the dimness intensifies, it is necessary to intensify the light, quantitatively and also qualitatively.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתבו מג' אדר שני - אשר מאיזה סיבה נתעכב המענה עד עתה - ובפרט שבסיום מכתבו רמז ג"כ תוכן המענה, והוא:

ידוע מנהג בית הרב אשר אין נוהגין בכתיבת הסכמות לספרים וחוברות, וידוע מרז"ל אל תשנו מנהג אבותיכם. ובנדון דידן הנה הספר שהוא מעתיק, אשר אף שלא הזכיר שמו ושל מחברו במכתבו, כנראה מגליונות העתקה שצירף המדובר הוא מחיבורו על התורה של בעל המחבר ספר חורב, וספרים אלו הרי ידועים ומפורסמים בחוגים שכנראה אליהם מתכווין בהעתקתו.

והשי"ת יזכה את כאו"א מאתנו למלאות חלקו ותפקידו בבירור וזיכוך חשכת העולם, והארתו בנר מצוה תורה אור ומאור שבתורה זוהי פנימיות התורה.

אקוה שלמותר לעוררו על הכרח הגמור בזמננו זה לקבוע שיעורים גם בלימוד פנימיות התורה, והכרח זה גם לאלו יו"ח של החוגים שבדורות לפנים לא עסקו בזה, וכידוע המשל שבתגבורת החשך מוכרח להגדיל כמות האור וגם איכותו.
