Greetings and blessing,

I am responding to your letter, which was undated, in which you once again envisage the possibility of coming here. I am surprised at this. You see the success of your work in the place where you currently are. You also observe that no one could replace you. All this proves that you have found the shlichus* which is yours in this world during these months. Why do you seek to abandon your shlichus* in order to go to another place?

Moreover, the sichah* of 19 Kislev 5664 (1903), of the Rebbe Rashab*, father of the Frierdiker Rebbe, found in Toras Sholom p. 39, emphasizes that avodas Hashem* is disturbed when one is thinking of one action while performing another. And it has been explained here, at a chassidishe* farbrengen*, the meaning of the expression "machshavos zaros*" — "foreign thoughts." These are not necessarily useless, and still less forbidden. They are, nevertheless, "foreign" in the context in which they arise, and from then on they disturb avodas Hashem*, all the more so since every Yid* belongs to a "goy kadosh" — a holy nation. You also know the importance of machshavah* for everything that is consecrated (i.e., the korbanos* or the goods offered to the Beis HaMikdash*).

Assume your shlichus*, then, where you are. You must feel a great joy, since you are the channel through which is multiplied that which concerns "ki ner mitzvah veTorah ohr" — "for the candle is a mitzvah* and the Torah is light" — likewise the luminary of the Torah, which is the teaching of Chassidus*, its practices and its ways.

It is not excluded that you may go to a better place later on. But you cannot do so in the situation that your city is currently experiencing, while great and important accomplishments are still in the course of development. There is surely no need to say more.

Awaiting your good tidings in this matter and, more generally, regarding the Chassidim* and their concerns,

M. Schneerson
