12 Adar Sheni 5714,
Brooklyn.

To the great Rav, the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, the great scholar, descendant of an illustrious lineage, of a holy family, Rav Avraham Abuhatzeira of Yavneh, Eretz Yisrael*,

Greetings and blessing,

I received with pleasure your letter of 23 Adar Rishon, in which you mention the visit, in your city, of the Chassid of multiple accomplishments, full of fervor and accomplishing great things, Rav Shimon Jacobovits. He commented on the Torah in your shul* and beis midrash*. Those who heard him were satisfied.

It is to be hoped that these words penetrate their hearts, so that there be fulfilled the assurance of the verse: "ki karov eilecha hadavar me'od beficha uvilvavcha la'asoso" — "The matter is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it." May Hashem grant that each of us assume the shlichus* entrusted to him here below. Every Yid* is the shliach* of the Adam haElyon*, Who sits upon the Heavenly Throne, as the Alter Rebbe* — author of the Shulchan Aruch* and of the Tanya* — explains in Likkutei Torah*, at the beginning of parshas Vayikra.

Obviously, one must confront various barriers and obstacles in order to carry out this shlichus* to completion, in the world and in the portion of it which each one receives as his share. Chazal* propose an effective remedy for this: "simchah* poretz geder" — joy bursts through every limit. One must therefore experience the joy of the mitzvah*, whether it be a mitzvah* properly speaking or a teaching of general scope which is a great principle of the Torah, "bechol derachecha da'ehu" — "In all your ways know Him."

To all this applies what the Rambam* says about simchah* — emphasizing that it is necessary at all times — at the end of Hilchos Lulav. These days of Adar, during which one increases one's joy, are propitious for all this, all the more so since there are two Adars and one adopts the more stringent view, expressed in the Shulchan Aruch* Orach Chaim chapter 568 paragraph 7, according to which one increases one's joy during both the first and the second Adar.

With my respects and my blessing for a freilichen* Purim*,
