To the Rav, the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem and devotes himself to communal needs, Rav Shlomo Zalman Hecht of Chicago,

Greetings and blessing,

I duly received your letters of 23, 26, 27, 28, 30 Adar Rishon, 3, 4 and 7 Adar Sheni, with what was enclosed therein. I await further good tidings in the matters you mention. Likewise, if you have information regarding the visit of Mr. Shazar to Chicago, you will convey it to me.

I noted with satisfaction what you write concerning the distinguished Chassid who fears Hashem. You will explain to him that he should not be saddened at the end of the week when he sees that his earnings are not as great as he had expected. You know the opinion of my father-in-law the Rebbe, whose merit shall protect us, that a businessman should not draw up a balance every week, but only from time to time.

In general, that which belongs to the realm of holiness should be counted. Nevertheless, this counting should be carried out only at propitious moments — all the more so since this man himself seems to be troubled by it. He draws up his accounts on the basis of the ma'aser* he sets aside, and that is a good initiative. But this must not affect his progress, his development, and his bitachon* in Hashem.

In this matter, the giving of tzedakah* is propitious. The recital of Tehillim* is likewise effective. Perhaps it would be good for you to study with him, or explain to him, what is said in the "Sha'ar HaBitachon*" of Chovos HaLevavos*.

Concerning the letterhead for the association of Chabad* women and girls, a search is currently under way on the basis of a proposal that has been formulated separately. When a final result is reached, you will be informed.

מאשר הנני קבלת מכתביו, מכ"ג, כ"ו, כ"ז, כ"ח ולמ"ד אד"ר, וג', ד', ז' אדר ב' עם המצורפים אליהם, ואחכה לבשו"ט נוספות להענינים שכותב אודותם. כן בטח אם יש אצלו להודיע מה בקשר עם בקור מר שז"ר שי' במחנו, יכתוב גם עד"ז...

נהניתי ממ"ש לי אודות הוו"ח אי"א מוה"ר... ויש להסבירו אשר אין להצטער ממה שלפעמים עוברת שבוע וההכנסה לא היתה כמו ששיער מראש. וכבר ידועה שיטת כ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר זצוקלל"ה נבג"מ זי"ע אשר אין לסוחר לעשות באלאנס בכל שבוע ושבוע כ"א מזמן לזמן, כי כמו שבכלל בצד הקדושה צ"ל בחשבון, הרי לאידך גיסא צ"ל זה רק בזמנים המסוגלים, ובפרט שכנראה בהנ"ל הרי זה מבלבל אותו. ומה שעושה החשבון בהנוגע למעשר נכון הוא; אבל ההשפעה מזה על התרחבות והתפשטות והבטחון בהשי"ת, אצ"ל. ונוסף שעל זה גופא נתינת הצדקה סגולה היא הרי אמירת תהלים ג"כ מועיל, ואפשר הי' כדאי שכת"ר ילמוד אותו או יסביר לפניו הענינים המובאים בשער הבטחון דחובת הלבבות.

בהנוגע ללעטערהעד בשביל האגודת נשי ובנות חב"ד, הנה מתעסקים בזה מתאים להצעה שהיתה גם ממקום אחר וכשיתקרב הדבר אל הפועל בודאי יודיעוהו...
