Greetings and blessing,

I am responding to your letter of 26 Adar Rishon.

I saw with satisfaction that you and your wife are undertaking to give tzedakah* and to adopt — without making it a vow — the good practices that I mentioned.

You tell me that you had your tefillin* and your mezuzos* checked, and that they were kosher. Nevertheless, this checking must be performed by an experienced sofer*, and it would be good if he would write to me personally to tell me what he found. For it seems to me that there is a doubt — perhaps it concerns the batim*. You will therefore ask the sofer* to write all this to me.

You conclude your letter by asking how to repay me. My reward will be the action you will undertake with sons and daughters of Yisrael* to draw their hearts close to the avodas Hashem*, with closeness and ahavas Yisrael*.

With the appropriate effort, you will surely find the way to accomplish all this. From time to time, it would be good for you to receive a guest in your home. The mitzvah* of hachnasas orchim* is, indeed, propitious for having children.

במענה על מכתבו מכ"ו אדר א'.

הנה נהניתי מה שכותב שהוא וכן זוגתו תחי' מקבלים עליהם הענינים דצדקה והנהגות טובות מה שכתבתי לו - בלי נדר -.

ומה שכותב שבדק התפילין והמזוזות ומצא אותם כשרים, הנה צריך שיבדוק אותם על ידי סופר מומחה , ומה טוב שהסופר בעצמו יכתוב לי איך מצא אותם, כי כמדומה לי שיש בהם איזה חשש, ואפשר הוא בהבתים וכו', ויבקש את הסופר הבודק שהוא בעצמו יכתוב לי על דבר זה, כנ"ל.

ומה שמסיים במכתבו מהו שכרי. הנה השכר בזה הוא שירבה בקירוב לבם של בני ובנות ישראל לעבודתו ית' ודוקא בדרכים של קירוב ואהבת ישראל. ובודאי בהשתדלות המתאימה ימצא הדרכים לזה, ומה טוב אם באפשרי שמזמן לזמן יאכילו אורח בביתם אשר מצוה של הכנסת אורחים סגולה מיוחדת לה לבנים.
