B"H,

[Adar Rishon 5714]

I saw approximately three hundred of these letters[1] at my father-in-law the Rebbe's, who did not authorize the publication of some of them[2], and there is not the shadow of a doubt that their content is authentic — except for those who consider that the most obvious way of interpreting this event is a totally supernatural miracle. Such people may imagine that there was, miraculously, a man in Odessa capable of falsifying and inventing these three hundred letters and then disappearing.

With Hashem's help, when I have the time, I intend to publish once again all the letters printed in HaTamim*, together with the letters whose publication my father-in-law the Rebbe had permitted but which were not published because in the meantime HaTamim ceased to appear. As an introduction to that compilation, I will set out what allows me to reach the conclusion just stated[3]. Here I will cite only two points:

A) All those who were in southern Russia — that is, near Odessa and Kherson — when these letters appeared, were men of renown, particularly those who knew the history and teaching of chassidus*.

Now, none of those personalities had the capacity or the possibility of writing these letters by inventing their content from scratch.

B) Great confusion reigned at that time. Relations between states were difficult. In such a period it was practically impossible to procure the parchment on which these letters were written.

Those who contest the authenticity of these letters base themselves essentially on the fact that some of their dates seem contradictory. They therefore highlight errors involving a single word or even a single letter. Sometimes these are omissions of words. Now, anyone who has once copied letters[4], especially if he had to do so quickly, knows that a copyist — even a competent one — will make errors in at least 5% of the lines, despite a second and a third re-reading. And, I repeat, this is the most competent copyist.

I know unfortunately what I am speaking about, since I myself proofread a substantial portion of the chassidic maamarim* and seforim* published by our publishing house.

By contrast, a forger who is trying to make a fake to resell to a Rebbe's family — that is, to people who know chassidic history and its teaching — will know that he must be careful and re-read his text many times. He would fear that errors might be discovered, that he might be publicly disgraced and suffer financial losses.

From this point of view, the errors — leaving aside those of the HaTamim printer — prove that these letters are not the work of a forger conscious that he had to be careful because he was eager to resell them at the best price to those who fully understood their content. On the contrary, they were addressed to people who possessed only a superficial knowledge of their content.

Here is yet another proof of the conclusions reached by my father-in-law the Rebbe — which he probably had from his father — namely:

A) There is no doubt that the content of these letters is authentic.

B) They are copies of writings whose authors had a deep knowledge of chassidus and even of Kabbalah*.

There is yet another point that also leads to the conclusion of my father-in-law the Rebbe. All those who saw these hundreds of letters, all gathered together to be sold to a representative of Lubavitch, did not imagine that these were originals. For all the letters are written in the same handwriting on identical parchment. A forger who would have committed his misdeed in this way could only have hoped to find a buyer among those devoid of any critical sense or even of the most elementary common sense.

In addition to all this, there were among the unpublished letters kameios*[5], letters bearing ornaments[6] and vocalized[7], as my father-in-law the Rebbe told me. There are therefore in these texts — and even in those that have been published — explanations not known to all, but transmitted orally from one Rebbe to the next, from the Alter Rebbe* to my father-in-law the Rebbe's father.

I have set forth here only general considerations, but in my view they are sufficient not only to dismiss the arguments figuring in this article[8] and the previous ones, but also to fully adopt the opposite conclusion, which appears the most logical.

It is established that the Rebbe of Ruzhin endured a severe imprisonment. To date, no scientific 'researcher' contests this — even though one of them, in Poland, reached the 'scientific and definitive conclusion' that the Baal Shem Tov* never existed. When someone was imprisoned, all his property was confiscated. Now, it is certain that the Rebbe of Ruzhin possessed, in larger or smaller quantity, manuscript letters of his contemporaries or of the generations immediately preceding him, seforim and objects precious to him — for example because he had received them as an inheritance.

One can be certain that the Rebbe, when he found himself in a safe place, sought by various means to have what belonged to him returned. Obviously, he could not intervene directly with the authorities, since he had escaped from prison. He had to act in secret.

If those who were trying to do this on behalf of the Rebbe succeeded in bribing the people who could intervene in this matter — what did those people have to do in order to find a solution and reduce the risk that the restitution of these writings to their owner could be discovered? In all logic, it was necessary to replace them with others, of the same appearance and the same number as those that had been returned.

Obviously, all this could not be done calmly, with all the time needed. It was therefore impossible to do a serious re-reading of these texts. Moreover, there was no need to do so, since those who were carrying out the substitution and those who would later conduct any possible investigation understood Russian better than chassidus.

Likewise, it is clear that the recopying was done on the parchment or paper in use at the time of the substitution, and not at the time of the original writing. Moreover, in those days no one knew that it is possible to analyze a parchment to determine when it was made.
